Chapter 7 - The Courtroom Confrontation

Three months later, the preliminary hearing for The State of Massachusetts v. David Vance began at the Suffolk County Superior Courthouse.

The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal observers, and members of the public.

David sat at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, his hair unkempt, his head hanging low. Sitting in the row behind him was Rebecca. Stripped of her designer clothes, wearing a plain gray suit and no makeup, she looked old, bitter, and utterly defeated.

When Maya took the witness stand, a quiet hushed over the gallery. She wore an elegant navy suit, her hair styled neatly, looking regal and poised.

David’s defense attorney tried everything to break her during cross-examination.

"Mrs. Vance," the defense attorney began, stepping forward. "Isn't it true that you and your husband frequently had intense, loud arguments? Isn't it true that on the night at The Copper Lantern, you provoked him by threatening to embarrass his family financially?"

"Objection!" Eleanor shouted from our side. "Victim blaming!"

"Sustained," the judge ruled sternly. "Rephrase, counselor."

The defense attorney turned back to Maya. "Did my client actually drag you, or did he simply lose his balance while trying to guide you out of the restaurant?"

Maya looked directly at the jury, then turned her eyes slowly toward David.

"My husband grabbed my hair with such force that he tore clumps of my scalp loose," Maya testified, her voice echoing clearly throughout the courtroom. "He dragged me because he wanted to prove to his mother, to the restaurant, and to me that he owned me. For four years, he made me believe I was worthless. But the real truth—the truth that his financial records prove—is that he was a coward hiding behind my hard work, stealing my money to cover up his own failures."

Rebecca sprang up from her seat in the gallery. "You ungrateful little whore!" she screamed, pointing a shaking finger at Maya. "My son made you!"

"Order in the court!" the judge slammed his gavel repeatedly. "Bailiffs, remove that woman immediately!"

Rebecca was forcibly escorted out of the courtroom, kicking and screaming, while the jurors watched in utter disgust. David buried his face in his hands, knowing his last shred of defense had just been destroyed.
