Chapter 13 - Fractured Alliances

The attack on Kayla was the spark that ignited our counteroffensive.
The next morning, Marcus Allen met me at a quiet coffee shop two streets away from the court house. Marcus brought along a stack of public property records and corporate filings he had pulled through his connections in municipal housing.
"Look at this," Marcus said, sliding a folder across the small wooden table. "Richard Vance isn't acting out of spite for Tiffany or jealousy toward Kevin. This is pure real estate speculation."
I opened the folder. Highlighted in red marker were three entire commercial blocks surrounding Gloria’s Corner.
"Vance's holding company has spent eighteen months buying up old warehouses and vacant lots along the corridor," Marcus explained. "The only piece of property on this entire three-block strip he doesn't own or control is Gloria’s diner. As long as your family holds that deed, his high-density luxury development plan can't move forward."
"So Tiffany was just a convenient weapon," I said, realization dawning on me.
"Exactly. Vance used her debts and her bitterness to get inside Kevin’s financial paper trail. But when Tiffany refused to sign that false affidavit on Sunday, Vance decided to burn everything down using his political connections in the tax enforcement office."
At UIC, Kayla wasn't staying passive either. Rather than hiding from the vicious rumors on campus, she scheduled an emergency meeting with the dean of business administration and her ethics professor. Armed with Gloria’s meticulously kept paper receipts and receipts from her own weekend shifts at the diner, she laid out the exact financial reality of her education.
"My family didn't give me a free ride," Kayla told the dean calmly, her voice ringing with the quiet strength she had inherited from her grandmother. "Every dollar of my tuition comes from sweat, early mornings, and honest work at a neighborhood counter. I welcome any independent review of my academic and financial standing."
Her courage paid off. The university issued a statement affirming her full integrity and opening an internal investigation into the malicious origin of the forum posts.

The trail led directly to a senior student assistant in the administration office—a young woman whose father was a junior partner at Richard Vance’s law firm.
The net was closing, but our enemies were growing desperate.
