Chapter 18 - Breaking the Chain

With Vance’s empire crumbling and his legal team abandoning ship, the human wreckage left in his wake remained to be settled—most notably, Tiffany.
The day after Vance’s arrest, Tiffany sat alone in a small booth at the back of Gloria’s Corner, clutching a lukewarm mug of coffee. Her apartment lease in Oak Brook had been terminated, her accounts were frozen due to her peripheral involvement in Vance's scheme, and she had nowhere left to go.
Kayla walked over and sat down across from her mother.
"Why did you come back to us on Sunday, Mom?" Kayla asked softly, looking into Tiffany's exhausted eyes. "Was it really just because you were afraid of Vance?"
Tiffany looked away, tears dripping slowly onto the wooden table. "I was terrified, Kayla. But... when I drove past this neighborhood and saw the lights hanging in the backyard... when I saw your dad laughing and working, looking happier than he ever did in our six-bedroom house... I realized I had spent my whole life chasing things that made me completely hollow."
Kevin stepped out of the kitchen, wiping his hands on his apron, and stood next to Kayla.
"You made terrible choices, Tiffany," Kevin said gently, without bitterness. "You hurt Kayla. You hurt my parents. You tried to burn down the life I rebuilt."
"I know," she sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "I don't expect you to forgive me. I don't deserve it."
"Forgiveness isn't about what you deserve," Gloria’s voice chimed in as she walked over, carrying a hot plate of fresh cornbread and soup, placing it firmly in front of Tiffany. "It’s about clearing out the poison so we can live. You are going to face the legal consequences of what you signed, Tiffany. But you will not do it alone, and you will not do it in the gutter."
Kevin sat down next to his daughter. "We spoke with Sarah Jenkins. If you tell the complete truth to the state prosecutor regarding Vance’s operations, they will offer you probation without prison time. And once your probation is complete, if you want to rebuild your life... real work, honest work... you can start by working shifts here."

Tiffany looked up in utter disbelief. "After everything I did to you?"
"My mother taught me that a broken bowl can be mended if you use the right glue," Kevin smiled gently. "It’s time to stop running, Tiffany."
