Chapter 17 - The Mastermind Unmasked

Twenty minutes later, the main ballroom was scheduled for the keynote address where Vance was set to formally announce his acquisition of the city commercial corridor.
Vance stepped up to the podium, adjusting his microphone, a triumphant expression dominating his face.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Vance began, his voice echoing over the high-end sound system. "Tonight, we look toward the future of urban renewal. A future built on progress, modernization, and clear leadership—"
"Mr. Vance," a stern voice cut through the quiet audience.
It was Arthur Pendelton, walking slowly down the center aisle holding the open binder in his hand. Two uniformed security guards were walking right behind him.
The crowd gasped. Murmurs erupted across the round dinner tables.
"Arthur? What is the meaning of this?" Vance stammered, holding his hands up in confusion. "I am in the middle of the project launch."
"The board has just held an emergency vote," Pendelton stated, his voice booming clearly across the grand room. "In light of credible, documented evidence of bribery, corporate espionage, and attempted arson linked to your holding company, the Heritage Foundation has officially canceled all credit lines extended to your firm."
"This is absurd! Who gave you this garbage?" Vance raged, pointing a trembling finger at the crowd.
"The truth came from the very people you tried to destroy," Pendelton replied coldly. "Your security clearance is revoked. State investigators are waiting in the lobby."

As two state troopers stepped into the ballroom to escort Richard Vance out, the high-society crowd shrank away from him as if he were radioactive.
I stood by the service exit, taking one final photograph of Vance being led away in handcuffs. It wasn't taken out of malice or revenge. It was recorded as a final testament to the fall of a man who thought money could overwrite the human spirit.
