Chapter 2 - The Echoes of Blood

The heavy rain began to pound against the roof of my home, masking the sound of approaching tires on the asphalt outside. I stepped out of the nursery, sliding the flash drive and the brass key into the internal pocket of my tactical jacket.

I didn't turn on the lights. I knew every inch of this house—every floorboard that creaked, every shadow cast by the oak trees outside, every entryway. I took my position at the top of the stairwell, fading into the dark alcove beside the linen closet.

Outside, the faint sound of doors clicking shut echoed through the storm.

Three men crept up the front porch steps. They didn't knock. They used a professional lockpick set, turning the deadbolt in less than five seconds. The front door swung open, casting a narrow beam of street light across the scrubbed, bleached hardwood floors where Claire’s blood had been washed away.

"Check the upstairs," a low, gravelly voice ordered. "Victor said tear the plaster apart if you have to. If the key isn't here, he's going to put a bullet in all three of our heads."

The men were dressed in tactical black gear without insignia—mercenaries hired through Blackwood Security Logistics. The lead man clicked on a high-intensity flashlight, sweeping the beam across the living room before signaling his two partners to move toward the staircase.

I waited until the first mercenary reached the seventh step.

In one fluid movement born from fifteen years in special operations, I stepped out from the darkness, grabbed the mercenary’s tactical vest, and snapped his collarbone with a brutal downward palm strike. Before he could scream, I drove his head into the wooden banister, stripping his silenced pistol from his holster in a single motion.

The second mercenary raised his weapon, but I fired two suppressed rounds into his chest. He tumbled backward down the staircase, crashing into the third man at the bottom.

I moved down the steps like a phantom. The third mercenary scrambled to his feet, pulling a combat knife, but I caught his wrist, twisted his arm until the joint shattered, and pinned him against the bleached floorboards—the exact spot where Claire had suffered.

I pressed the barrel of the pistol directly against his jaw.

"Who gave you the order to come here tonight?" I whispered, my voice devoid of any human warmth.

The mercenary gagged on his own blood, his eyes wide with pure, unadulterated terror. "Drake! Vance Drake! Head of Blackwood Security!"

"Where is Vance Drake right now?"

"He's... he's in the surveillance van down the street!" the man gasped, weeping from the agony of his broken arm. "Monitoring the feed! Please... don't kill me... I was just following orders—"

I struck him across the temple with the heavy butt of the pistol, knocking him cold.

I walked out the front door into the pouring rain, leaving the three unconscious and bleeding men behind. Halfway down the block, parked beneath the weeping willow tree, sat an unmarked black delivery van. Its engine was idling, water dripping from its exhaust pipe into the gutter.

I approached the driver’s side window from the blind spot, pulled the utility knife from my belt, and slashed both rear tires before stepping up to the driver's door.

I knocked on the glass.

The window rolled down three inches. Vance Drake’s scarred face appeared behind the glass, his eyes squinting into the darkness. "Is it done? Did you find the key?"

Instead of answering, I smashed the glass with the butt of my weapon, reached inside, unlocked the door, and dragged Drake out of the vehicle onto the wet pavement.

Drake was a sixty-pound mass of muscle, a former PMC operative, but shock and my military training completely stripped him of his defenses. I threw him against the side of the van, pressing the hot barrel of the gun into his throat.

"General Walker..." Drake choked out, his hands clawing at my wrists. "You're making a mistake..."

"My wife is in the ICU with thirty-one broken bones," I said, leaning closer so he could see the hollow, icy abyss in my eyes. "Her brothers watched her bleed. And you sent men into my home to finish the job."

"It was Victor!" Drake stammered, his bravado instantly collapsing under the weight of my presence. "Victor ordered the hit! He said if we didn't get Vault 12 opened before the Department of Justice audit tomorrow morning, the whole empire collapses!"

"Vault 12 at Port Apex," I said softly.

Drake gasped. "You... you know about the vault?"

"I have the key, Drake," I said. "And now, you're going to give me something else."

I reached into his jacket, pulling out his encrypted security access card to the Blackwood Estate in Ridgefield.

"If you ever step foot near my wife's hospital room," I whispered into his ear, "I won't use a gun."

I slammed his head against the door of the van, rendering him unconscious, and tossed his radio onto the pavement, crushing it beneath my boot.
