Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Aftermath

Three weeks later.

The fall of Blackwood International was swift and absolute.

The publication of the Aegis Ledger triggered a historic political scandal. Dozens of corrupt city officials, police officers (including Detective Miller), and corporate executives were indicted by federal grand juries. Port Apex was placed under federal receivership, its illegal warehouses dismantled, and the Blackwood family assets worth billions were frozen by court order.

Victor, Marcus, Julian, Thomas, Gabriel, and Lucas were all held without bail in a high-security federal facility, facing life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Only Eli—the youngest brother who had called me that dark night—was granted immunity in exchange for his full testimony against his father and brothers.

Yet, despite the complete destruction of my enemies, the only victory that mattered was taking place inside Room 408 at Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital.

I sat in the chair beside Claire’s bed, holding her hand.

The heavy fiberglass casts had been replaced with lighter splints. The purple bruises on her face were fading into faint yellow shadows, and her breathing was soft, steady, and natural.

The afternoon sun streamed through the window, casting a warm, golden glow across the room.

Suddenly, I felt a microscopic twitch in her fingers.

I froze, stopping my breath. "Claire?"

Her eyelashes fluttered softly. She groaned, a faint, tiny sound escaping her throat as her head shifted on the white pillow.

Slowly, painfully, her eyelids opened. Her soft green eyes—the eyes I had dreamed of every night while fighting in dusty, war-torn lands half a world away—looked around the room in confusion before finally settling on my face.

Tears welled up in my eyes instantly.

"Ethan..." she whispered, her voice raspier than paper, her jaw still tight from the healing wires.

"I'm here, baby," I sobbed, leaning down to press my cheek gently against her uninjured cheek. "I'm right here. You're safe. It's over."

Her eyes darted frantically down toward her stomach. Panic spiked in her expression. "The... the baby..."

I quickly reached under the blanket, taking her frail hand, and placed it directly over her stomach.

"Our baby is fine, Claire," I whispered, smiling through my tears. "A strong heart. Fighting every single day. Just like you."

Claire let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, closing her eyes as tears flowed down her temples into her hair. "They... they tried to take... the key..."

"I found it, my love," I promised her, kissing her fingers. "I found everything. Vault 12 is open. Your father and brothers are in federal prison. They will never, ever hurt you again."

She smiled—a small, tired, beautiful smile that brought back all the warmth in my frozen world.

"Daddy’s home..." she whispered softly.

"Yes, Claire," I answered, holding her tight against my chest. "Daddy’s home for good."
