Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Glass

By midnight, I was standing in the dimly lit corridor of the Intensive Care Unit at Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital.

My trusted friend and former military combat medic, Captain David Ross, stood guard outside Claire’s door, dressed in civilian clothes with his hand resting casually inside his jacket pocket. David had served alongside me in three deployments; he was the only man in this city I trusted with my life.

"Ethan," David said softly as I approached. "The floor is clear. I had the hospital administration swap out the nursing staff on this level with our trusted veterans."

"How is she, Dave?" I asked, my voice cracking for the first time all night.

"Dr. Evans stepped out twenty minutes ago," David replied, his expression somber. "Her vital signs are stabilizing, but the trauma... Ethan, her body went through unimaginable stress. They managed to stop the internal bleeding, but she remains in a medically induced coma. The fetal monitor is active."

My heart stopped. "The baby?"

David looked down at his feet, then back up into my eyes with a faint, sorrowful smile. "The heartbeat is faint, Ethan. But it's there. The baby is fighting. Just like her mother."

A surge of emotion hit me so hard I had to place a hand against the wall to steady myself. Our child was alive. Through thirty-one broken bones, through the beatings, through the bleach and the terror, Claire had protected our baby.

I pushed open the door to Room 408 and stepped inside.

The room was filled with the rhythmic, mechanical hum of life-support monitors, IV pumps, and the steady beep of the heart rate machine. Claire lay in the center of the bed, her frail body almost swallowed by the sterile white sheets. Her face was bruised purple and blue, her jaw wired shut, and both of her arms wrapped in thick fiberglass casts.

I walked to the side of her bed, pulling a chair up close. I gently reached out, avoiding the intravenous lines, and wrapped my fingers around her tiny hand.

"I found it, Claire," I whispered, leaning down so my lips were inches from her ear. "I found the onesie. I found the photo. And I found Key Number 12."

The heart monitor gave a slight jump, the green line spiking momentarily.

"I know what they did to you," I continued, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes and dripping onto her blanket. "I know how brave you were. You saved our child, Claire. You saved me from their trap. Now it's my turn to fight for you."

I pulled the small yellow onesie from my inner pocket—the one that read Daddy’s Home—and laid it gently across her chest, over her heart.

The door behind me opened quietly. David stepped inside, his expression tense.

"Ethan, we have a problem," David whispered. "Detective Miller just walked into the lobby downstairs with four uniform officers. He’s claiming he has a warrant to take possession of Claire’s personal effects for 'evidence collecting.'"

I stood up slowly, smoothing the blanket over Claire's shoulders. "Miller is working for her father."

"He's pushing hard, Ethan. He claims if we resist, he’ll arrest me for interfering with a police investigation and order the hospital staff to clear the room."

I looked down at Claire one last time, bending to kiss her bruised forehead.

"Watch her, David," I commanded calmly. "Don't let anyone through that door."

"Where are you going?"

"To remind Detective Miller who he answers to."

I walked out of the room and headed down the corridor toward the elevators. When the doors slid open on the ground floor, Detective Miller was standing near the security desk, shouting at the head nurse while holding a stamped paper document.

Miller was a fat, arrogant man with sweat glistening on his thinning hairline and a gold watch on his wrist—a watch I recognized as a luxury model manufactured exclusively for Blackwood International executives.

"I don't care about your hospital policy!" Miller bellowed at the nurse. "This is a active crime scene investigation! Move aside or I'll put you in handcuffs!"

"Detective Miller," I called out, my boots echoing against the polished terrazzo floor.

Miller turned, his eyes narrowing as he saw me approaching. He straightened his tie, putting on a smug, authoritative sneer. "General Walker. I was hoping to see you. As part of the ongoing investigation into the break-in at your residence, I need to seize all personal belongings found on Mrs. Walker at the time of her admission."

"The break-in," I repeated, stopping three feet away from him. "You called it a home invasion in your preliminary report, Miller. You filed that report twenty minutes after she was admitted, before the forensics team even arrived at my house."

Miller’s face flushed slightly. "We... we had witness statements from the neighbors—"

"You didn't talk to the neighbors," I interrupted, stepping directly into his personal space. "You took a fifty-thousand-dollar wire transfer from Victor Blackwood’s offshore shell company at 11:15 PM last night. You erased the CCTV footage from the intersection near my street. And now you’re here to destroy the remaining evidence."

The four uniformed officers behind Miller shifted uncomfortably, looking at each other in confusion and growing alarm.

"That's slander! You're assaulting an officer of the law!" Miller shouted, reaching for his holster.

Before his fingers could touch his leather strap, I grabbed his wrist, twisted it back, and slammed his forehead onto the edge of the security desk. The stamped warrant flew from his hand, fluttering to the floor.

"General! Stand down!" one of the uniform officers shouted, reaching for his taser.

I didn't draw my weapon. Instead, I pulled out my military credentials and held them inches from the officer's face, along with the encrypted tablet displaying the wire transfer logs I had pulled from Claire's flash drive.

"I am Major General Ethan Walker, Commander of the 4th Joint Special Operations Task Force," I barked with supreme authority. "This man is currently under investigation for high treason, federal conspiracy, and complicity in attempted murder. If any of you touch your weapons, you will be court-martialed and tried as co-conspirators in a federal investigation under my direct military jurisdiction. Stand down!"

The officers froze. They looked at the bank transfer logs displayed on the tablet screen—showing Miller’s name, his bank account number, and the exact payment originating from Blackwood Shipping.

Slowly, the officers lowered their hands.

Miller groaned on the counter, blood dripping from his broken nose onto the white tile floor.

I leaned down to his ear, my voice dark as pitch. "Tell Victor Blackwood I’m coming to Vault 12 at dawn. Tell him to bring all seven of his sons. If he misses the appointment, I won't hand the Aegis Ledger over to the Federal Prosecutors... I’ll broadcast it live on every news network on the planet."
