Chapter 5 - The Fake Injury Scandal

By Monday morning, the local tabloid media in Phoenix—tipped off by Javier’s cheap PR assistant—had picked up the story.
The headline on a local news website read: "PROMINENT BEAUTY ENTREPRENEUR ACCUSED OF ASSAULTING ELDERLY MOTHER-IN-LAW IN BITTER DIVORCE."
The article featured a dramatic photo of Lydia Carter wearing a thick white foam neck brace, leaning heavily on a cane, looking frail and tearful outside a medical clinic. Accompanying the photo was an interview where Lydia claimed I had gone into a "savage, unprovoked rage" because she asked my brother to use proper table manners, resulting in her suffering severe cervical spine trauma when I "hurled a heavy dining room table at her body."
I sat in Victoria Sterling’s office, watching the local news segment on her wall-mounted television.
"They're trying to play the public sympathy card," Victoria said, adjusting her glasses as she leaned against her desk. "They know they can't win the financial audit in court, so Javier is trying to force a settlement by ruining your public brand reputation. Naomi Vance Beauty relies on a clean, wholesome, empowering image. If retail partners think you're a violent abuser, buyers will pull your products off the shelves."
"Major retailers like Sephora and Ulta were supposed to finalize our regional distribution deals next month," I said, feeling a knot of anxiety tighten in my chest. "If they freeze negotiations because of this, I lose millions."
"Then we strike back immediately," Victoria said, picking up a remote control. "Did you forget what you installed in your apartment three weeks ago, Naomi?"
I blinked. "The indoor security cameras?"
"Precisely," Victoria smiled triumphantly. "You installed a Ring interior security camera above the kitchen cabinet to monitor the apartment when you were traveling for trade shows. Javier and Lydia didn't know it was active."
My eyes widened. "The footage from the dinner!"
"I subpoenaed the cloud server backup yesterday," Victoria said, pressing play on her laptop.
The high-definition video with crystal-clear audio filled the screen.
The video clearly showed our dining room. It showed my brother Wyatt sitting quietly, politely holding a chicken drumstick. It captured Lydia jumping up, screaming insults at him, and landing a resounding, violent slap across his face that knocked him sideways.
It captured Javier sitting at the head of the table, sipping his beer, casually saying, "Mom went too far, but Wyatt needs to learn manners. Naomi, clean this up."
And then, it showed me grabbing the table, flipping it away from my brother toward the empty side of the room, far out of reach of Lydia, who didn't have a single drop of food on her dress, let alone a neck injury.
In fact, as Javier and Lydia left the apartment ten minutes later, the camera outside the front door captured Lydia walking completely unassisted, swinging her handbag, laughing, and saying to Javier: "Make sure she pays for a new dress, son."
Victoria turned off the screen. "That isn't just evidence of self-defense and defense of a minor, Naomi. That is textbook perjury and filing a false police report."
"When can we release this?" I asked, my heart pounding with satisfaction.
"We aren't just releasing it to the police," Victoria said, a brilliant, dangerous grin spreading across her face. "We are hosting a press conference on the steps of the Cook County Superior Court at 2:00 PM today. We are going to show the world the truth about Lydia Carter."
At 2:00 PM, dozens of news cameras and reporters gathered outside the courthouse.
Victoria stood at the podium in a sleek charcoal suit, with me standing beside her in an immaculate white blazer.
"Members of the press," Victoria announced into the bank of microphones. "Over the past forty-eight hours, my client, Naomi Vance, has been the victim of a coordinated, malicious smear campaign orchestrated by her estranged husband, Javier Carter, and his mother, Lydia Carter."
Victoria gestured to a large digital screen set up beside the podium.
"Mr. Carter claims his mother was assaulted. We present to you the unedited, continuous audio-visual recording of the event in question."
The video played on the big screen in front of thirty news crews.
The reporters gasped loudly as the audio echoed through the plaza—Lydia’s vicious scream, the sharp sound of her hand striking Wyatt's face, and Javier’s dismissive, cruel response.
The cameras caught every frame of Lydia standing completely uninjured, hitting a teenager, and lying to the police.
By 3:00 PM, the news cycle had completely inverted.
