Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Syndicate

At 6:00 AM on Friday morning, federal agents simultaneously executed search warrants across three states.

I sat in my new executive office in downtown Phoenix, watching the breaking news coverage on a massive flat-screen monitor mounted on the wall.

Live footage from Los Angeles showed federal agents carrying dozens of boxes of files and computer towers out of the glass headquarters of Apex Chemical Holdings. A secondary camera angle showed Richard Ross—Brittany’s father—being led out of his Bel-Air mansion in handcuffs, wearing an expensive silk bathrobe, his face covered in shame as reporters shouted questions at him.

In Phoenix, FBI agents knocked down the door of the luxury rental house where Brittany Ross was staying.

Because Brittany was listed as a nominal officer on two of the offshore accounts used to receive the kickback funds, she was escorted out in handcuffs alongside her father's corporate accountants.

The news anchor’s voice echoed through my office: "FEDERAL AUTHORITIES BUST MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR COSMETICS MONEY LAUNDERING RING. EXECUTIVE JAVIER CARTER AND SUPPLIER RICHARD ROSS CHARGED WITH RACKETEERING AND TAX EVASION."

My phone rang. It was Victoria.

"Have you seen the news, Naomi?" she asked, her voice rich with satisfaction.

"I'm watching it right now," I said, standing near the window, looking out over the Phoenix skyline.

"Javier was picked up by federal marshals thirty minutes ago at his mother's apartment," Victoria said. "Because this is a federal racketeering indictment, bail has been set at five million dollars cash. Neither Javier, Richard Ross, nor Lydia can raise a fraction of that amount. They will remain in federal custody until trial."

"And Brittany?"

"Given her advanced pregnancy, her attorneys are arguing for home confinement under electronic monitoring, but her personal assets have been completely seized by the Department of Justice," Victoria explained. "She has nothing left, Naomi. Her father’s business is bankrupt, her boyfriend is facing twenty years in federal prison, and her luxury lifestyle has vanished into thin air."

I closed my eyes and drew a long, deep, cleansing breath.

The nightmare that had begun with a brutal slap across my brother’s face at my dining room table had finally come to an end. The parasites who had fed off my labor, insulted my family, and attempted to destroy my life were going to face the full, unyielding weight of federal justice.

"Naomi?" Victoria asked softly through the receiver. "Are you okay?"

"I'm better than okay, Victoria," I replied, a genuine smile spreading across my face. "I'm free."
