Chapter 5 - The Gates of Ashford

Ten minutes later, the front doors of the mansion were pushed open with violent force.
Richard Vance strode into the grand foyer like a king inspecting a conquered territory. He was a silver-haired man in his late fifties, wearing an immaculate double-breasted suit, his face contorted in a mask of rage. Behind him walked four attorneys carrying heavy leather briefcases and two uniformed police officers looking thoroughly uncomfortable.
"Ashford!" Richard roared, his voice bouncing off the marble walls. "Where is my daughter?! What kind of sick game are you playing, locking a young woman in a bedroom against her will?!"
Nathan walked down the grand staircase slowly, his hands resting casually in his suit pockets. I walked three steps behind him, holding a slim leather folder beneath my arm.
"Your daughter committed felony extortion, corporate fraud, and attempted assault with a deadly weapon in this house five hours ago, Richard," Nathan said, stopping on the lower landing. "She is currently being held under citizen's arrest pending federal indictment."
Richard let out a booming, arrogant laugh that rang with supreme confidence. "Federal indictment? Are you insane, Nathan? You're talking about my daughter! She’s your fiancée!"
"She was my fiancée," Nathan corrected coldly. "Until she threw a champagne glass at my Chief Forensic Analyst and demanded she pick up broken glass with her bare hands."
Richard’s eyes flicked over to me, assessing my appearance with a sneer of total disgust. "Who? This servant girl? You're taking the word of a minimum-wage maid over the daughter of your largest board partner?"
"She isn't a maid, Mr. Vance," I stepped forward, opening the leather folder and pulling out a single sheet of paper. "My name is Elena Cruz. I am a former Senior Forensic Auditor with Deloitte’s Financial Crimes Division. And this is a copy of Federal Form 1099, filing an emergency whistleblower disclosure with the Securities and Exchange Commission, signed three hours ago."
Richard’s arrogant smile faltered slightly. "Whistleblower disclosure? On what grounds?"
"On the grounds that Sterling & Vance has engaged in sixty-two counts of systematic wire fraud, illegal short-selling using stolen corporate collateral, and tax evasion totaling ninety-four million dollars," I said, my voice echoing through the foyer with absolute clarity.
One of Richard Vance’s attorneys immediately stepped forward, his face turning pale. "Richard... if an SEC Form 1099 has been logged with an auditor’s signature, all primary asset transfers are subject to an immediate federal freeze order."
"Shut up!" Richard spat at his lawyer, his composure beginning to crack around the edges. He took two steps toward the staircase, pointing a thick finger at Nathan. "You think you can bully me, Nathan? I own thirty-five percent of the voting stock in Ashford Capital! I hold the senior debt covenants on your San Francisco research facility! If I trigger a default clause right now, your entire tech development arm goes into liquidation by sunset!"
"Try it," Nathan said softly.
Richard blinked. "What did you say?"
"I said, try it, Richard," Nathan repeated, taking the final three steps down the stairs until he was standing face-to-face with the older man. "Trigger the default clause. Call your bank. See if they accept your authorization."
Richard pulled a sleek smartphone from his jacket pocket, his fingers trembling slightly as he dialed a speed-dial number. He pressed the phone to his ear, waiting for the ring.
"Frank? It’s Richard," he said into the receiver. "I need an immediate secondary freeze on Ashford Capital’s credit line... What do you mean?"
Richard’s face went from angry red to a pale, ghostly grey.
"What do you mean, account restricted?!" Richard yelled into the phone. "I am the managing director of Sterling & Vance! ... What federal order?!"
Nathan reached out, took the phone from Richard’s limp fingers, and pressed the end-call button.
"Your bank accounts were frozen thirty minutes ago, Richard," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a register of total, unyielding victory. "Elena’s filing didn't just go to the SEC. It went directly to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. As of 4:00 AM, you, your daughter, and your law firm are officially classified as primary targets of a federal asset laundering investigation."
Richard backed up a step, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps. He looked at the two police officers standing by the door.
"Officers! Arrest them!" Richard stammered, pointing frantically at Nathan and me. "They’re holding my daughter! They’ve hacked my personal bank accounts!"
The senior police officer stepped forward, taking off his hat. "Mr. Vance, we just received a broadcast notification from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s regional director. We are under strict orders to secure this perimeter until federal agents arrive at six o'clock."
The officer looked at Nathan, bowing his head slightly. "Mr. Ashford, where is Victoria Hale?"
"In the east wing guest quarters, Officer," Nathan replied smoothly. "Marcus will show you the way. Please ensure she remains comfortable until her federal transport arrives."
As the officers walked past Richard Vance toward the east wing, Richard sank onto the velvet bench near the front doors, his head in his hands, his expensive suit looking suddenly crumpled and hollow.

Nathan didn't look at him again. He turned to me, offering his hand.
"Come, Elena," Nathan said softly. "We have a stock market to open."
