Chapter 6 - The Opening Bell

At 8:30 AM on Monday morning, the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Ashford Capital in downtown Manhattan was surrounded by television news trucks, satellite dishes, and dozens of financial journalists jostling for position behind velvet ropes.
The headlines on every major financial network were screaming in bold red font:
ASHFORD CAPITAL UNCOVERS MASSIVE CORPORATE EMBEZZLEMENT VANCE FAMILY CHARGED WITH FEDERAL WIRE FRAUD STOCK MARKET EXPECTS HIGH VOLATILITY AT OPENING BELL
Inside the executive boardroom on the fifty-fourth floor, the floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking view of Central Park bathed in crisp morning sunlight.
The room was filled with the remaining members of Ashford Capital’s board of directors—wealthy, nervous men and women sitting around an oval glass table, staring anxiously at the massive Bloomberg screens mounted on the wall.
I sat beside Nathan at the head of the table, wearing a tailored navy blue suit, my laptop connected directly to the boardroom's central display system.
"We have fifteen minutes before the opening bell, Nathan," Arthur Vance’s former ally, Director Henderson, said nervously, wiping sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. "If Richard Vance’s firm collapses today, our stock is going to take a thirty percent hit! Shareholders are panicking!"
"Shareholders are panicking because they don't have the facts, Director Henderson," I spoke up, clicking a key on my laptop.
The large screen behind us lit up, displaying a comprehensive, real-time financial restructuring model.
"Over the past forty-eight hours," I explained to the silent board, "we have successfully traced and recovered three point eight million dollars of the stolen funds from Bellmere Holdings. Furthermore, by exercising our emergency governance clauses under Section 8 of the corporate charter, Nathan Ashford has officially repurchased Richard Vance’s thirty-five percent voting stake at a sixty percent discount under the fraud default provisions."
The board members gasped.
"A sixty percent discount?!" Director Henderson exclaimed. "That means... that means Nathan now holds a seventy-two percent absolute majority in Ashford Capital!"
"Correct," Nathan said, standing up from his leather chair and looking at his board. "And at 9:00 AM, I am publicly announcing our merger with Apex BioTech—a groundbreaking medical technology firm whose valuation will double our market capitalization within ninety days."
He leaned over the table, resting his hands on the polished glass.
"Richard Vance tried to destroy this company to cover his own greed," Nathan said, his voice ringing through the room with absolute authority. "Instead, he has given us total control, eliminated our internal opposition, and funded our expansion for the next decade."
Suddenly, the boardroom doors opened, and Marcus stepped inside, holding a silver tray with two cups of fresh espresso.
"Mr. Ashford, Ms. Cruz," Marcus said with a crisp bow. "The SEC Field Director and the United States Attorney are waiting on line one to confirm the final seizure of Sterling & Vance’s assets."

Nathan picked up his espresso cup, raising it toward me in a quiet, private toast.
"Take the call, Elena," Nathan smiled, his dark eyes shining with pride. "It’s your case."
