Chapter 3 - Shadows of Vale Meridian

The headquarters of Vale Meridian Group rose sixty stories above Michigan Avenue—a brilliant tower of blue glass and black steel that dominated the Chicago skyline.
Inside the top-floor executive boardroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Caroline sat at the head of the long glass conference table. Across from her sat fourteen board members, all men and women in dark tailored suits who controlled billions in global assets. Sitting in the guest corner, looking smug in a white linen suit, was Margaret Vale. Beside her sat Preston Hale.
"This is madness, Caroline," declared Richard Vance, the seventy-year-old senior board director and a long-time ally of Margaret. "You fired your mother from the executive committee, you hired a former janitor as your family’s chief security officer, and now rumors are circulating that you intend to reopen the Julian Vale accident investigation!"
"They aren't rumors, Richard," Caroline said smoothly, tapping her tablet screen to display a series of financial documents on the room's massive central monitors. "They are active legal proceedings."
Margaret slammed her hand on the table. "You are unstable, Caroline! The stress of your divorce and the girls' mental health problems have clearly broken your judgment. Preston has graciously offered to step in as interim co-CEO to help stabilize the family's voting shares!"
Preston offered a warm, practiced smile to the board. "I only want what’s best for the company and my daughters, ladies and gentlemen. Caroline is overwhelmed. Hiring a man with a clear personal vendetta against our family to live on the estate with my children? It’s a massive security risk. What if he hurts them?"
The board members began whispering nervously among themselves.
Caroline slowly stood up. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't show anger. She simply pressed a button on her remote.
The screens changed.
Instead of financial reports, an array of bank statements from the Grand Cayman Islands appeared, highlighted in bright red.
"These are the account ledgers for Apex Global Holdings," Caroline announced, her voice echoing through the silent boardroom. "A shell corporation registered in Nassau four years ago. Between 2022 and last month, $6.4 million was transferred into Apex Global from June and Ivy’s education trust."
Preston’s smile froze.
"And who holds the primary signature for Apex Global?" Caroline continued, stepping around the table until she stood directly behind Preston’s chair. "Preston Hale. Co-signed by my mother, Margaret Vale."
"That was... that was a strategic investment fund!" Preston stammered, his face suddenly turning pale. "It was meant to diversify the girls' long-term portfolio!"
"It was meant to pay off your sports betting debts in Macau, Preston," Caroline corrected coldly. "And to purchase a four-million-dollar yacht currently docked in Miami. I filed a formal complaint with the federal wire fraud division two hours ago."
Gasps erupted across the table. Two board members immediately pulled away from Margaret as if she were contagious.
"You... you set us up," Margaret gasped, her carefully applied makeup failing to hide her sudden panic.
"No, Mother," Caroline said softly, leaning down to speak into her mother's ear. "You set yourselves up when you thought I was too tired to notice what you were stealing." She looked up at the board. "Effective immediately, Margaret Vale’s voting shares are frozen pending the federal investigation. Preston Hale is barred from entering any Vale Meridian property worldwide."
"You can't do this!" Preston shouted, jumping to his feet. "I’m their father! I have rights!"
"You have the right to remain silent, Preston," Caroline said as the double doors of the boardroom opened.
Two federal agents in dark suits stepped into the room, followed by two uniformed Chicago police officers.
"Preston Hale?" the lead agent asked. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and money laundering."
As the handcuffs clicked around Preston’s wrists, he screamed at Caroline, his face twisted in rage. "You bitch! You’ll rot in that house alone! You hear me? Nobody will ever love you!"
Caroline stood motionless as he was dragged out of the room. She didn't look at her mother, who sat frozen in her chair, stripped of her power, her legacy, and her pride in a single hour.

Caroline turned back to the remaining board members.
"Now," she said calmly, taking her seat at the head of the table. "Let us discuss our fourth-quarter international expansion."
