Chapter 6 - The Trap

The peace of the winter months was shattered on a icy Tuesday morning in late January.

Caroline was at her office reviewing quarterly earnings when her private phone rang. It was Arthur Vance, her chief corporate legal counsel.

"Caroline," Arthur’s voice was urgent, laced with deep anxiety. "We have a massive situation. The Cook County State's Attorney just issued an arrest warrant."

Caroline stood up instantly. "For whom?"

"For Ethan Walker."

The pen in Caroline’s hand snapped in half. "On what grounds?"

"Corporate espionage, theft of proprietary defense software, and grand larceny," Arthur read rapidly from a court document. "An anonymous whistleblower submitted a flash drive to the FBI two hours ago. It contains encrypted Vale Meridian military drone schematics transferred directly from your private server to Ethan Walker's personal laptop."

"That's impossible!" Caroline shouted, her voice booming through her office. "Ethan doesn't even have access to my corporate server!"

"The digital footprint says otherwise, Caroline," Arthur warned. "The transfer was executed from your home network at 2:00 AM last night—using your private executive encryption key. The authorities are on their way to your Lake Forest estate right now to execute a search warrant."

Caroline felt as though the floor had given way beneath her feet.

She grabbed her coat and purse, running toward her private elevator. "Call our criminal defense team! Get them to the house immediately!"

Thirty minutes later, Caroline’s limousine tore through the gates of the Lake Forest estate.

Two police cruisers and an unmarked federal vehicle were parked in the driveway.

Inside the foyer, Ethan stood in handcuffs, flanked by two federal agents. Leo was crying loudly near the stairs, while June and Ivy were screaming at the officers, holding onto Ethan's belt.

"Leave him alone! He didn't do anything!" June wept hysterically.

"Get your hands off him!" Ivy shouted, trying to kick an agent's shin.

"Girls, stop!" Ethan commanded gently, keeping his voice steady despite the steel cuffs cutting into his wrists. "It's okay. Go to Leo. Stay with Leo."

Caroline burst through the front door, her face flushed with fury. "Release him immediately! This is a complete fabrication!"

The lead federal agent stepped forward, holding a clear plastic evidence bag containing a silver external hard drive. "Ms. Vale, we found this hidden inside Mr. Walker's tool cabinet in the guest house. It contains classified Vale Meridian source code."

Ethan looked at Caroline. His eyes were calm, but deep within them lay a terrible, heartbreaking fear—the fear that she might believe the lies.

"I didn't take anything, Caroline," Ethan said softly. "I swear on my son's life."

Caroline walked right past the federal agents, stopping inches from Ethan. She reached up and placed both of her hands on his face.

"I know you didn't," Caroline said with absolute, unshakeable conviction. She turned to the lead agent. "Who submitted the anonymous tip?"

"We are not at liberty to disclose the identity of a federal informant, Ms. Vale," the agent replied.

At that moment, a sleek black town car pulled up outside.

The passenger door opened, and Margaret Vale stepped out, supported by a silver cane. She walked into the foyer, a cold, triumphant smile playing across her aged lips.

"I told you, Caroline," Margaret said, her voice echoing through the marble hall. "I told you he was a parasite who entered this house for revenge. He seduced you, manipulated my granddaughters, and now he’s selling our family's trade secrets to our competitors!"

Caroline looked from her mother’s smug face to the silver hard drive in the evidence bag.

Suddenly, every piece of the puzzle fell into place.

"You," Caroline whispered, her eyes narrowing into cold, lethal slits. "You didn't just report him, Mother. You staged it."

"Don't be absurd!" Margaret scoffed. "I am protecting this family's legacy!"

"Take him in, Agent," Margaret ordered the officers. "Let justice finally be served."

Ethan looked at Caroline as the agents led him toward the door. "Take care of Leo," he whispered.

"I will get you out by tonight, Ethan," Caroline swore, her voice ringing with absolute, terrifying determination. "I promise you."
