Chapter 7 - Unmasking the Deceit

By 4:00 PM, Ethan was being held in a federal holding cell in downtown Chicago.
Inside the executive conference room at Vale Meridian headquarters, Caroline had assembled her elite cybersecurity unit—six brilliant young engineers led by a former NSA specialist named Maya Lin.
"I want every single packet of data sent from my home network between midnight and six AM analyzed," Caroline commanded, pacing behind the engineers. "Every IP address, every router log, every keystroke."
"Ms. Vale," Maya said, her fingers flying across three screens simultaneously. "The logs show the transfer took place at precisely 2:14 AM using your personal tablet."
"I was asleep at 2:14 AM," Caroline said coldly. "And my tablet was on my nightstand."
"Wait," Maya paused, zooming in on a line of code. "Look at the MAC address of the device that initiated the transfer. It wasn't your tablet."
Caroline stepped closer to the screen. "Explain."
"Someone used a signal duplicator—a device that spoofs your tablet’s unique hardware signature," Maya pointed to a secondary series of data packets. "The actual command was sent from a secondary IP address routed through an encrypted VPN... located at the Lake Forest Country Club."
Caroline’s eyes flashed with lethal clarity. "Who was logged into the country club network at two AM?"
Maya typed rapidly, tapping into the club's public Wi-Fi access logs. A list of connected devices appeared.
One name stood out immediately: Preston_Hale_Guest_Suite.
Caroline slammed her palm onto the desk. "Preston."
"And there's more," Maya added, opening an audio file attached to the country club's internal security camera network. "I breached the club's perimeter cameras from last night. Look at this."
A video played on the central monitor.
It showed Preston Hale sitting in a private lounge at the Lake Forest Country Club at 1:45 AM, handing a thick envelope of cash to a man wearing a Vale Meridian maintenance uniform.
Caroline recognized the man instantly—it was Gary Vance, a junior night-shift janitor whom Margaret had personally hired two weeks before Ethan was arrested.
The video captured Gary handing Preston a silver hard drive—the exact same hard drive the FBI had 'found' in Ethan's guest house tool cabinet four hours later.
"They bribed Gary to plant the hard drive in Ethan's tool cabinet while we were sleeping," Caroline said, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "And Preston executed the fake server breach from his room at the club using Margaret's administrative access codes."
"It's a textbook frame job," Maya confirmed. "And we have it on three different camera angles with unredacted audio."
Caroline turned to Arthur Vance, who was standing by the door holding his briefcase.
"Arthur," Caroline said, her voice calm, precise, and absolute. "Call the United States Attorney. Tell him to meet us at the federal courthouse in twenty minutes."

She looked out the high-rise window at the snow falling over Chicago.
"And call the press," Caroline added, a cold, majestic smile gracing her lips. "I want every news camera in Illinois waiting on the courthouse steps when my mother and ex-husband are taken into custody."
