Chapter 3 - The Crimson Note

The peace lasted exactly forty-eight hours.

By Sunday evening, the raw plywood on the front of Frankie’s Diner had been replaced with reinforced, bullet-resistant glass—an astronomical expense covered instantly by Leo's accountants. To the passing eye, the diner looked like any other greasy spoon on 4th Street, but behind the counter, it had become a command center.

Tess was learning to read the quiet body language of her four guardians. Viktor was the strategist, always calculating angles; Anton was the enforcer, silent and deadly; Pavel was the scout, observant and fast; and Lev was the driver, capable of maneuvering a heavy SUV through narrow alleys at terrifying speeds.

At 8:00 p.m., just as Tess was wiping down the grill, the diner’s back door bell chimed softly.

Tess spun around. Pavel and Anton immediately drew their silenced pistols, moving in tandem toward the kitchen.

"Clear," Anton’s deep voice echoed from the dark back hallway a moment later. "Miss Morgan... you need to see this."

Tess washed her hands and walked nervously into the kitchen. The stainless steel prep tables glinted under the harsh overhead fluorescent bulbs. Stuck to the heavy steel rear exit door with an ice pick was a thick, crimson envelope.

Viktor used a gloved hand to pull the ice pick free and opened the note. His brow furrowed deeply as he read the words written in elegant, dark ink.

"What is it?" Tess asked, her pulse spiking.

"It is an invitation," Viktor said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "From Ivan Nikolai. He knows Don Vane is using this diner as a stronghold. He wants a sit-down."

"A sit-down?" Tess repeated. "Is that a truce?"

"No," Pavel scoffed from the doorway. "It’s a trap."

"Where?" Tess asked.

Viktor looked at her, his scarred face grim. "Here. Tomorrow night at midnight. He demands that Don Vane meet him alone... with only you serving the drinks as a neutral witness."

Tess felt the air leave her lungs. "Me? Why me?"

"Because Ivan wants to assert dominance," Viktor explained, crumbling the note in his fist. "He wants to show the Old Man that he can step into his sanctuary, demand service from the girl who saved him, and dictate terms. It’s an insult."

Later that night, Leo returned to the diner to hold council. He sat in his usual booth, sipping tea that Tess had brewed for him, listening quietly to Viktor’s report.

"We refuse the sit-down," Viktor urged, leaning over the table. "We set an ambush. We catch Ivan’s motorcade on the bridge and end this tonight."

"No," Leo said softly, raising a single finger. The room fell instantly silent. "If we ambush him, his lieutenants will tear this city apart in revenge. The war will spill into the streets. Civilians will die."

"Boss, bringing Ivan here puts Tess in direct fire!" Anton argued.

Leo turned his cloudy blue eyes toward Tess. "Is that true, Tess? Do you feel endangered?"

Tess looked at the four dangerous men surrounding her. A week ago, she would have terrified of all of them. Now, she saw the fierce loyalty in their eyes—not just to Leo, but to her. She had saved their Don; in their eyes, she was sacred.

"They want to use me as a prop to intimidate you," Tess said, her voice growing surprisingly steady. "If I run, Ivan wins the mental game before the meeting even starts. I'll pour the coffee, Don Vane. You just make sure he doesn't leave this diner victorious."

Leo smiled warmly, leaning back. "Well said, my dear. Viktor, prepare the diner. Reinforce the rear exit, position snipers on the roof across the street, and wire the booths for audio. Tomorrow night, we entertain guest."
