Chapter 5 - The Master’s Gambit

Ivan sat completely motionless, the steel blade of Leo's cane pressing just hard enough against his throat to draw a tiny bead of crimson blood.
"You... you wouldn't," Ivan choked out, his arrogance crumbling into desperate fear. "Kill me here, and my captains will tear this district apart!"
"Your captains are loyal to money, Ivan, not to you," Leo said smoothly, his blue eyes burning with lethal clarity. "And as we speak, Viktor is offering your captains a choice: accept a double payout from my accounts to swear allegiance to the Vane family, or meet the same fate you intended for me."
Ivan’s eyes widened as the reality of his position settled in. He had walked straight into a masterfully orchestrated trap. He thought he was cornering an old, tired wolf, only to realize he had stepped into the lair of an ancient alpha.
"What do you want?" Ivan rasped.
Leo leaned in close, his voice barely above a whisper. "I want your utter surrender. You will sign over your shipping contracts at the docks. You will liquidate your safehouses in this district. And you will leave this state before sunrise. If you ever set foot within fifty miles of this city again—or if any harm comes to Miss Tess Morgan—I will personally ensure you vanish so completely that not even your mother will remember your name."
Leo withdrew the cane blade with a swift, fluid motion and wiped the tip on a linen napkin.
"Pavel, disarm them and kick them out," Leo ordered dismissively, as if clearing away trash.
Pavel stepped forward, efficiently stripping Ivan’s bodyguards of their weapons, while Ivan nursed his severely scalded hand, glaring at Tess with pure, concentrated venom.
"This isn't over, waitress," Ivan spat, clutching his wrist as Pavel dragged him toward the door. "You think you're safe under an old man's coat? You're a corpse walking."
"Get out," Tess said, meeting his gaze without a single trace of fear remaining in her chest.
Pavel shoved Ivan and his men out into the foggy night, where Viktor’s squad tossed them into their own sedans and ordered them to drive.
When the heavy front door clicked shut, the diner fell quiet once more.
Tess leaned against the counter, her legs suddenly feeling like water. The adrenaline that had sustained her through the confrontation began to bleed away, leaving her trembling violently.
Leo stood up from the booth, walked over to her, and placed a soft, comforting hand on her trembling shoulder.
"You held your ground admirably, my dear," Leo said gently. "Slamming hot coffee on a rival mob boss's hand... I believe that is not covered in standard waitress training."
Tess let out a weak, breathless laugh, wiping a tear of nervous relief from her eye. "It was... instinct. He was going to hurt you."
"And you protected me again," Leo said softly, his cloudy eyes filling with genuine affection. "You have more courage in your little finger than half the men I have commanded in fifty years."
"Is it really over?" Tess asked, looking toward the window.
Leo’s expression sobered slightly. "Ivan is a wounded animal now. A wounded animal is predictable, but dangerous. He will try to flee, but he may try one last desperate strike before he goes. We must remain vigilant for a few more days."
He pulled out his pocket watch, checked the time, and looked at Tess. "For tonight, you rest. Viktor will drive you to a secure apartment I have prepared for you. No more cold, damp rooms with noisy radiators."

"Leo, I can't accept—"
"You can, and you will," Leo said firmly, leaving no room for argument. "You are no longer just an employee of Frankie’s Diner, Tess. You are under the protection of the Vane house. Accept it as a gift from an old man who owes you his life."
