Chapter 6 - The Calm Before the Siege

The new apartment was luxurious beyond anything Tess had ever imagined. Located on the top floor of a high-rise downtown, it featured floor-to-ceiling windows, soft velvet furniture, a fully stocked kitchen, and a private balcony overlooking the glittering city lights.

For two days, Tess lived in a strange limbo.

She didn't have to work double shifts. She didn't have to worry about rent or cheap instant noodles. Yet, she felt more restless than ever. Pavel stood guard in the hallway outside her door, while Viktor sent regular updates on the dismantling of Ivan Nikolai’s syndicate.

Ivan’s lieutenants had flipped overnight, accepting Leo’s generous bribes and abandoning their former leader. Ivan was now a man on the run, hunted by both Leo’s enforcers and his own former allies.

On Wednesday afternoon, Tess couldn't take the isolation any longer. She put on a warm coat and convinced Pavel to take her back to Frankie’s Diner.

"It is not safe yet, Miss Tess," Pavel warned as he drove the heavy armored SUV down 4th Street.

"Sitting in a golden cage isn't living, Pavel," Tess replied softly. "I need to feel normal again. Just for an hour."

When they arrived, the diner was quiet. The neon sign outside was finally fixed, glowing with a steady, warm crimson light through the light drizzle. Inside, Lev was wiping down tables, while Anton sat near the kitchen reading a newspaper.

Tess walked behind the counter, feeling an immediate sense of comfort. She tied her white apron around her waist, inhaling the familiar scent of ground coffee beans and bleach.

"It feels good to be back," she murmured, wiping down the laminate counter.

At 4:00 p.m., the front door opened.

Tess looked up, expecting to see Leo or Viktor.

Instead, a teenager wearing a rain poncho walked in holding a large cardboard box. "Delivery for Tess Morgan?"

Anton immediately stood up, his hand dropping to his holster. "Stay back, kid. Who sent that?"

"Just a guy on 2nd street," the teenager said nervously, setting the box on the nearest table and backing away quickly. "He gave me twenty bucks to drop it off."

Pavel stepped forward, pulling the kid aside while Anton approached the box with extreme caution. He used a long metal spatula to flip open the cardboard flaps.

Inside the box was a small, battery-operated digital timer counting down from sixty seconds—wired to four thick sticks of commercial dynamite.

"BOMB!" Anton roared. "GET OUT! NOW!"
