Chapter 7 - The Trap in the Snow

The storm cleared by noon the next day, leaving the forest shrouded in blinding white silence.
Inside the safehouse, Chloe and Lorenzo had turned the kitchen island into a war room. Laptops, printed ledgers, land surveys, and weapons lay scattered across the marble counter.
Chloe was rapidly typing, building an encrypted financial trap using the Rossy Corporation’s secondary offshore servers.
“Julian Vance wants the Sicilian estate because it sits on a natural deep-water port,” Chloe explained, pointing to a topographical map displayed on her screen. “Moretti doesn't care about the land—he wants the port to ship unregulated cargo into Southern Europe. If Julian successfully forged the deed transfer, he’ll need to activate the corporate escrow account in Zurich by 5:00 PM today.”
Lorenzo leaned over her shoulder, studying the screen. He was wearing a grey sweater, looking relaxed yet lethal.
“And if we freeze that escrow account?” Lorenzo asked.
“If we freeze it,” Chloe smiled, a wicked glint in her brown eyes, “Julian’s system will automatically generate a security alert sent directly to his personal cell phone. He’ll have to manually override it using his private biometric key from his home office in North Chicago.”
Lorenzo’s dark eyes flashed with cold realization. “Which proves he’s the one operating the forged account.”
“And,” Chloe added, tapping a key, “it gives Matteo his exact GPS coordinates the second he touches the keyboard.”
Lorenzo looked at her with pure, unadulterated admiration. He reached out, grabbed her face gently between his hands, and pressed a hard, warm kiss to her forehead.
“You are terrifying,” Lorenzo murmured against her skin.
Chloe’s cheeks flushed bright red, her heart executing a complex series of backflips. “I... I just like clean record-keeping.”
Suddenly, the cabin’s internal alarm system let out a low, warbling beep.
Lorenzo’s hand dropped to his belt instantly. He pulled his weapon, stepping in front of Chloe as he checked the security monitor mounted on the wall.
Two black SUVs had breached the outer perimeter gate, crushing the deep snow as they drove toward the front porch.
“Moretti’s men,” Lorenzo said, his voice instantly turning to iron. “Julian must have tracked the vehicle’s satellite transponder before we killed the signal.”
“How many?” Chloe asked, her voice tight.
“Eight. Maybe ten.” Lorenzo turned to her, grabbing a small, compact silver pistol from the counter and pressing it into her hands. “Do you know how to use this?”
Chloe looked at the cold metal. “Point the round end at the bad guys and pull the trigger?”
“Safety is off. Don't put your finger on the trigger until you’re ready to shoot,” Lorenzo instructed rapidly. He led her toward a heavy oak door near the back of the kitchen. “Inside here is a reinforced panic room. The door is four inches of solid steel. Once you’re inside, turn the wheel to lock it. Do not open it for anyone except me or Matteo.”
Chloe grabbed his sweater collar, pulling him down to her level.
“Don't you dare die out there, Lorenzo Rossy,” she demanded, tears threatening to spill from her eyes. “I still haven't reorganized your personal bank accounts!”
Lorenzo grinned—a fierce, wild, beautiful expression. He cupped her cheek and kissed her deeply on the lips—a hot, possessive, electric kiss that made Chloe’s knees go entirely weak.
“I’m not dying today, mia cara,” he whispered against her mouth. “I have a secretary to marry.”
Before Chloe could process the word marry, Lorenzo shoved her gently into the panic room and slammed the heavy steel door shut.

The heavy wheel clicked as she turned it, sealing her inside the pitch-black, silent room.
Outside, the gunfire began.
