Chapter 9 - The Account Restructured

Three weeks later.

Spring was beginning to break over Chicago, melting the gray slush on Wacker Drive into clear water running down the gutters.

The fortieth floor of the Rossy Corporation no longer smelled of bleach and cold espresso.

It smelled of fresh white lilies, warm vanilla, and sweet, rich Italian coffee brewed with real caramel.

The glass window in Lorenzo’s office had been replaced with reinforced, triple-paned bulletproof glass overlooking the shimmering expanse of Lake Michigan. His black stone desk was spotless—except for a small, framed photograph of a brown-haired woman smiling in a thrift-store blazer, holding a bright pink gel pen.

Chloe walked into the office carrying a thin leather folder.

She was wearing an exquisite emerald-green silk dress that hugged her curves perfectly, paired with black designer heels that matched her height to the millimeter. Her hair fell in glossy waves over her shoulders, and her hands were free of ink stains.

Lorenzo was sitting behind his desk, wearing a tailored three-piece charcoal suit.

The moment she entered, he set his pen down, his eyes locking onto her with an intensity that made her pulse race every single time.

“Good morning, Mr. Rossy,” Chloe said smoothly, stepping up to the desk.

“Good morning, Vice President Bennett,” Lorenzo replied, his lips curving into a warm smile.

Two days after the incident in Michigan, Lorenzo had officially restructured the corporate hierarchy of the Rossy Corporation. He had created a new position—Vice President of Corporate Integrity and Strategic Finance—and handed Chloe the keys to the corner office on the thirty-nine floor, complete with a six-figure salary, a stock allocation package, and full authority over every financial ledger in the organization.

She placed the folder on his desk.

“What’s this?” Lorenzo asked, opening it.

“The quarterly audit for the shipping division,” Chloe said, leaning against the edge of his desk just like she had on her first day. “We’ve reduced operational waste by fourteen percent, eliminated all undocumented sub-contracts, and successfully transitioned three of your former 'security firms' into legitimate private protection agencies.”

Lorenzo scanned the crisp, perfectly organized pages, noting the neat black ink and impecable formatting.

“Impressive,” Lorenzo murmured. “And what about the Moretti family?”

“Dominic Moretti filed for corporate bankruptcy yesterday,” Chloe smiled wickedly. “After I leaked his offshore tax evasion records to the IRS, his board removed him from power. He’s currently under federal house arrest in Naples.”

Lorenzo laughed—a rich, deep sound that filled the sunlit office. He reached out, grabbing her wrist gently, and pulled her down into his lap.

Chloe gasped softly, wrapping her arms around his neck as she settled against his broad chest.

“You’ve brought my empire to its knees, Chloe Bennett,” Lorenzo whispered, his hand sliding up her waist, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her hip. “My captains are afraid of you. My accountants tremble when you walk into the room. And my legal team won't sign a contract without your stamp of approval.”

“Good,” Chloe murmured, leaning closer until her lips brushed his jaw. “A clean empire is a long-lasting empire.”

“And what about us?” Lorenzo asked softly, his dark eyes searching hers with a rare, vulnerable warmth. “Is our ledger balanced?”

Chloe reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, bright pink gel pen.

She took Lorenzo’s right hand, turned it palm-up, and carefully drew a small, perfect neon-pink heart right over his pulse line.

“Not yet,” Chloe whispered, looking up into his eyes. “You still owe me a proper dinner. One where nobody shoots at the windows.”

Lorenzo smiled, leaning in to press his lips to her neck, making her gasp with delight.

“Tonight,” he promised. “8:00 PM. And I’m picking the shoes.”
