Chapter 2 - The Extraction and the Threat
The room was motionless as Sarah carefully introduced the lukewarm mineral oil compound into Nora’s ear canal. The fluid coated the microscopic creature, instantly starving it of oxygen without irritating its anchoring cilia.
Within forty seconds, the tiny, translucent thread released its grip on the sensitive nerve endings. Using micro-forceps under the specialized light, Sarah gently extracted the organism, placing it into a clear glass specimen vial.
Nora let out a long, shuddering gasp. Her shoulders dropped. The sharp, blinding pain that had tortured her for six hours vanished instantly.
"It stopped," Nora whispered, her head falling back against the pillow. "The biting stopped."
Daniel rushed to the side of the bed, pulling his daughter into his arms. The stoic Navy officer buried his face in her soft hair, his broad shoulders shaking with silent relief.
Dr. Caldwell stared at the glass vial in Sarah's hand, his face pale. "How... how did you know to look for a thermal-reactive filament? That's not in any standard pediatric emergency protocol."
"Because she spent time near the water recently," Sarah said, holding the vial up to the blue monitor light. "This organism only exists in deep-water marine runoff zones. Baycrest isn't near a freshwater lake, Dr. Caldwell. Where was she playing, Admiral?"
Daniel looked up, his expression instantly shifting from relieved father to high-ranking naval officer.
"Harbor Point Station," Daniel said, his voice dropping an octave. "She was with me on the pier during the fleet inspection yesterday evening."

Sarah’s eyes narrowed as she looked at the tiny specimen in the glass. "Harbor Point is a restricted military deep-water port. This parasite doesn't belong in coastal surface waters—unless something deep on the seabed was disturbed."
Daniel stood up slowly, looking at Sarah with a new, intense focus. "Nurse Vance... who exactly are you?"
