Chapter 7 - The Evidence in the Dark
The two terrified technicians tumbled out of the flooded room, coughing and gasping for air.
"Out! Get up the stairs now!" Daniel commanded, hoisting one of the injured workers onto his shoulder.
"Wait!" Sarah shouted. She leaped into the flooded control booth just as the water reached chest height.
"Sarah! We have to go!" Daniel yelled from the doorway.
"The hard drives!" Sarah cried, pointing to the main server housing mounted near the ceiling. "The automated biological sampling loggers—they record deep-sea core data in real-time!"
She grabbed a fire axe from the wall, smashed the protective acrylic casing, and yanked the two water-resistant black memory modules free from the server rack.
A massive surge of seawater shattered the outer glass window.
"Sarah!" Daniel plunged into the freezing water, catching her by her jacket collar just as the room fully submerged. He pulled her out into the corridor and dragged her up the iron stairs toward the pier above.
They collapsed onto the concrete surface of the upper deck, dripping with salt water and coughing out smoke. In Sarah’s tight grip were the two black server drives.
High above the harbor, the loud chop of heavy helicopter blades cut through the smog.
Two heavy Navy Seahawk helicopters were sweeping in low over the water, flanked by Coast Guard fast-interceptor boats.
Daniel sat up, gasping for breath, and looked at the drives in Sarah’s hands, then up at his incoming fleet.

"You really aren't just an ordinary night nurse, are you, Sarah?" Daniel asked with a breathless, proud laugh.
Sarah wiped wet hair from her face and smiled. "I told you, Admiral. I just pay attention to what's moving in the dark."
