Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks passed, morphing into a rhythm that Grant had never dared to dream of.
By day, he ran Mercer Development, working tirelessly from six in the morning until four in the afternoon. But at four o'clock sharply, he shut his laptop, handed his files to his executive team, and drove straight to Hannah’s neighborhood.
He spent his evenings helping Emma build her elaborate wooden dollhouse, teaching Sophie how to throw a baseball in the backyard, and sitting on the porch steps drinking chamomile tea with Hannah after the girls went to sleep. They talked—not about corporate restructuring or market shares, but about the lost years. Grant owned every single piece of his past selfishness, never offering excuses, only absolute remorse. And Hannah, slowly, painstakingly, began to let down her guard.
However, peace in the high-stakes world of finance is always temporary.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, Grant was sitting in his executive office when his chief legal counsel, David Vance, rushed in without knocking.
"Grant, we have a massive problem," David said, slamming a stack of legal summonses onto the desk.
Grant looked up from his computer. "What is it?"
"Arthur Whitmore," David said darkly. "He didn't go away quietly. He just filed a massive federal lawsuit against both Mercer Development and Brooks Strategic Group. He's alleging corporate conspiracy, insider trading, and tortious interference regarding his removal from Whitmore Capital."
Grant’s eyes darkened. "That's frivolous. Hannah owned the controlling shares legally. The board voted him out based on his own offshore tax fraud."
"It doesn't matter if it's frivolous," David warned. "Arthur hired the biggest litigation firm in New York. They filed an emergency injunction to freeze all financial assets of Brooks Strategic Group pending investigation. If the judge grants that injunction tomorrow morning, Hannah's firm won't be able to pay its payroll or execute its pending thirty-million-dollar logistics acquisition. It could liquidate her company within thirty days."
Grant stood up, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line. "He's trying to ruin Hannah to get revenge on us."
"It gets worse," David added quietly. "Arthur’s lawyers have issued subpoenas for Hannah’s personal records—including the birth certificates and paternity records of Emma and Sophie. They're planning to leak a narrative to the press that Hannah used her secret children to blackmail you into orchestrating a hostile takeover."
A wave of pure, toxic fury surged through Grant’s veins. Arthur Whitmore wasn't just coming after business assets anymore; he was weaponizing two innocent six-year-old girls to drag Hannah’s name through the mud.
"Call a meeting with Hannah immediately," Grant ordered, reaching for his coat. "We're going to her office now."
Twenty minutes later, Grant burst into Hannah’s conference room. Hannah was already there, surrounded by her top attorneys and financial advisors. Whiteboards were covered in complex defense strategies, but the mood in the room was grim.
"I heard about the subpoenas," Grant said, walking straight to the head of the table.
Hannah looked up. She looked tired, but her eyes burned with a fierce, protective fire. "He's attacking my daughters, Grant. He's trying to publicly paint me as a corporate blackmailer who trapped a billionaire."
"I won't let him touch them," Grant said firmly. "I will take full responsibility in front of the press. I'll tell the world the absolute truth—that I abandoned you seven years ago, that you built your empire completely independent of me, and that I am the one who crawled back begging for forgiveness."
"No," Hannah said, standing up. "If you do that, Mercer Development's stock will plunge twenty percent overnight. Investors will think you're emotionally compromised."
"I don't care about the stock price!" Grant roared, his voice echoing through the glass walls. "I care about you! I care about Emma and Sophie! I spent seven years putting stock prices and corporate power ahead of the people I love, Hannah! I will burn Mercer Development to the ground before I let Arthur Whitmore hurt my family again!"
The entire room went dead silent.
Hannah stared at Grant, stunned by the sheer, unadulterated passion in his voice. There was no corporate strategy in his eyes, no calculated PR maneuver. It was the raw, instinctual rage of a man protecting his family.
At that moment, the conference room door opened, and Claire Whitmore walked in.
Everyone turned in shock. Claire wore an elegant black trench coat, carrying a sleek leather briefcase.
"Claire?" Grant asked, surprised. "What are you doing here?"
Claire walked up to the table and set her briefcase down with a heavy thud. "I heard what my father is doing. I came to give you the key to ending this war permanently."
Hannah eyed Claire with cautious respect. "What key?"
Claire unlocked her briefcase and pulled out a thick, black leather binder marked Project Apex.
"My father is a meticulous hypocrite," Claire explained smoothly. "For ten years, he kept a private, encrypted ledger of every off-the-books transaction, bribed regulatory official, and insider trading network he built to grow Whitmore Capital. He kept it in a safe at our family estate—a safe that I happen to know the combination to."
Grant’s eyes widened. "Claire... this is nuclear."
"It is," Claire agreed calmly. "If this ledger reaches the Department of Justice, my father will not only lose his lawsuit; he will spend the next fifteen years in a federal penitentiary. Whitmore Capital will be forced into federal receivership."
Hannah looked at Claire with deep appreciation. "Claire... he is your father. If you leak this, your family's reputation will be utterly destroyed."
Claire looked Hannah dead in the eye. "My father destroyed our family a long time ago when he turned love into a transaction. He tried to ruin Grant, he tried to force me into a loveless marriage, and now he is attacking two innocent little girls." She paused, turning to Grant. "You made a terrible mistake seven years ago, Grant. But over the last two weeks, I've watched you fight for your daughters with everything you have. That is what a real father does. My father never did that for me."

Grant stepped forward and took Claire’s hand, giving it a deep, grateful squeeze. "Claire... I don't even know how to thank you."
"Just be the father those girls deserve," Claire said, a genuine, beautiful smile gracing her lips. She turned to Hannah. "Deliver this to the Federal Prosecutor at eight o'clock tomorrow morning, Ms. Brooks. Let's end this."
