Chapter 8 - The Public Declaration

Two months later, the annual Charlotte Business Gala was held at the Grand Palais Ballroom. It was the premier high-society event of the year, attended by governors, titans of industry, international investors, and elite media outlets.

The rumors had been circulating for weeks. The abrupt cancellation of Grant Mercer's high-society wedding to Claire Whitmore, the shocking arrest of Arthur Whitmore, and the dramatic rise of Brooks Strategic Group had been the talk of every financial column in the country. Tonights gala was the first public event where all parties would be under the same roof.

At 8:00 PM, a sleek silver sedan pulled up to the red carpet outside the ballroom.

The valet opened the door, and Grant Mercer stepped out. He looked immaculate in a tailored black tuxedo, but he didn't walk down the carpet alone.

He reached back into the car and offered his hand.

Hannah Brooks stepped out into the flashing lights of fifty news cameras. She was breathtaking. She wore an off-the-shoulder emerald green silk gown that matched her eyes, her dark curls cascading elegantly over her shoulders.

Holding Grant’s other hand were two adorable six-year-old girls, wearing matching white silk dresses and yellow rain boots—a playful, defiant homage to the day their life changed forever at the bus stop.

The red carpet erupted. Flashbulbs went off like a wall of lightning. Photographers shouted frantic questions.

"Mr. Mercer! Is Ms. Brooks your new partner?"

"Ms. Brooks! Is it true you executed a hostile takeover of Whitmore Capital?"

"Who are the children, Grant?"

Grant stopped in the center of the red carpet, right in front of the primary wall of press microphones. He gently lifted Sophie into his left arm, held Emma’s hand with his right, and stood side-by-side with Hannah.

He raised his hand, signaling that he wished to speak. The shouting reporters instantly fell silent, thrusting their directional microphones forward.

"I know there have been endless rumors and speculation over the last few months," Grant said, his clear, confident voice echoing across the plaza. "And tonight, I want to set the record entirely straight."

He looked down at Hannah, his eyes filled with immense pride and love.

"Seven years ago, I made the single biggest mistake of my life," Grant declared openly to the national press. "I walked away from the most brilliant, extraordinary woman I have ever known because I was arrogant enough to believe that business success was all that mattered. I left Hannah Brooks to fight alone."

The reporters listened in stunned silence.

"While I was building skyscrapers of steel and glass, Hannah built an empire of her own—Brooks Strategic Group—with her own intellect and sheer willpower," Grant continued. "And more importantly, she raised our two brilliant, beautiful daughters, Emma and Sophie, completely on her own."

He looked at the flashing cameras without a single shred of shame or hesitation.

"I am not standing here tonight as a tycoon who conquered a market," Grant said, his voice ringing with absolute conviction. "I am standing here as a man who was saved by his family. Hannah Brooks is the heart of my life. Emma and Sophie are my absolute world. Mercer Development and Brooks Strategic Group are officially merging our philanthropic efforts to found the Brooks-Mercer Foundation, dedicated to funding education and support for single mothers across the nation."

The red carpet remained silent for one long, stunned second—and then erupted into thunderous, deafening applause.

Inside the ballroom, Claire Whitmore stood near the balcony, holding a glass of champagne. She watched Grant, Hannah, and the girls through the glass doors, a warm, genuine smile on her face.

Rachel Mercer, Grant’s sister, walked up beside Claire, raising her glass in a toast. "You gave him his life back, Claire."

"No," Claire said softly, watching Grant laugh as Sophie played with his bow tie. "I just opened the door. He was brave enough to walk through it."
