Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Titan

The following morning at 9:00 AM, the federal courthouse in downtown Charlotte was surrounded by dozens of news vans, satellite trucks, and flashing police lights. Reporters crowded the marble steps, shouting questions into microphones.

Arthur Whitmore arrived in a black luxury sedan, flanked by six attorneys and four bodyguards. He walked up the steps with his head held high, projecting the supreme arrogance of a man who believed he was entirely above the law.

He stepped into the main corridor of the courthouse, expecting to meet his legal team to sign the emergency injunction against Hannah Brooks.

Instead, he was met by six federal agents wearing dark blue jackets with yellow FBI lettering across the back.

Standing beside the lead federal agent was Hannah Brooks, dressed in a sharp, flawless charcoal suit, and Grant Mercer, standing tall at her side.

Arthur froze in his tracks. "What is the meaning of this?"

The lead FBI agent stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Arthur Whitmore, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, tax evasion, racketeering, and illegal market manipulation."

Arthur’s face turned gray. "This is absurd! On whose authority?"

"On the authority of the United States Department of Justice," the agent replied coldly. "You have the right to remain silent..."

As the agents stepped forward and snapped the cold steel handcuffs around Arthur’s wrists, Arthur looked past them, his furious, bloodshot eyes locking onto Grant and Hannah.

"You think you've won?" Arthur sneered, his voice trembling with bitter rage. "You're a fool, Grant! You gave up an empire for a woman who kept your own blood hidden from you for seven years!"

Grant didn't flinch. He walked slowly up to Arthur, looking the fallen tycoon directly in the eyes with absolute, unshakeable calm.

"I didn't give up an empire, Arthur," Grant said, his voice quiet, steady, and filled with profound clarity. "I finally woke up and built one that actually matters. Enjoy your cell."

The agents escorted Arthur away, dragging him past the roaring crowd of news photographers flashing cameras through the glass doors. The great titan of Whitmore Capital had fallen, his reign of fear and manipulation crushed under the weight of his own corruption.

Standing in the quiet corridor of the courthouse, Grant turned to Hannah.

The intense adrenaline of the past forty-eight hours seemed to drain away, leaving behind a profound, peaceful silence between them.

"It's over," Hannah whispered, looking at the empty hallway where Arthur had been led away.

"It's over," Grant agreed.

He looked down at her. In the soft morning light filtering through the high arching windows of the courthouse, she looked magnificent. The shadow of threat that had hung over her and their daughters was finally gone.

"Hannah," Grant said softly, taking a courageous step closer to her. "The legal debt between Mercer Development and Brooks Strategic Group is cleared. The Whitmore threat is gone. You don't owe me anything. Your company is completely secure."

Hannah looked up into his gray-green eyes. "Why are you telling me this, Grant?"

"Because I want you to know that my standing here has nothing to do with contracts, or debt, or business," Grant said, his voice thick with raw, honest emotion. "I love Emma and Sophie with everything in my soul. And... I never stopped loving you, Hannah. Not for a single day in seven years. I was a arrogant fool who thought success meant financial power. But the worst day of my life was the day I walked out of our apartment, and the best day of my life was the rainy morning I saw you at that bus stop."

Hannah’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes welled with tears, but for the first time in seven years, they were not tears of pain or anger.

"Grant..." she breathed softly.

"I know I can't undo the past," Grant continued, taking her hands into his own. "I know I missed seven years of their lives, and seven years of yours. But if you will let me, I want to spend every single day of the rest of my life earning back your trust. Not as a billionaire CEO. Just as Grant. The man who loves you."

Hannah looked down at their joined hands. She remembered the young boy who used to share cheap noodles on a cold apartment floor, the man who had broken her heart, the father who had kneeled on her office floor begging for his children, and the man who had risked his entire empire to protect her family.

Slowly, tenderly, her fingers wrapped around his.

"You're late for dollhouse construction, Grant," Hannah said, a radiant, tearful smile breaking across her face. "Emma said if the roof isn't finished by five o'clock, you're fired."

Grant laughed—a bright, ecstatic sound that filled the grand marble hallway. He pulled her into his arms, wrapping his arms securely around her, holding her close as the cold rain outside finally gave way to the warm morning sun.
