Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Strike

The sound of my palm making full, unyielding contact with Vanessa’s cheek was so loud it cut through the heavy silence of the dining room like a crack of thunder.
Vanessa’s head snapped sideways, her pristine white dress swishing with the violent force of the impact. The carefully decorated bakery cake slipped from her fingers, crashing onto the hardwood floor in a ruined heap of white fondant and shattered sugar pearls.
For three seconds, nobody moved. Twenty relatives sat frozen at the massive mahogany table, their glasses held mid-air, their jaws slack.
Vanessa stumbled back two steps, clutching her left cheek. A bright crimson imprint of my hand was already burning through her flawless, pale skin. Tears immediately welled in her wide, dark eyes—not from pain, but from sheer, unadulterated shock. She was a woman accustomed to getting her way through delicate smiles and subtle manipulation; she had clearly never been struck in her life.
"You..." Vanessa gasped, her voice trembling, her innocent facade completely fracturing. "You crazy bitch! You just hit me!"
"I hit a trespassing pest," I said, my voice ice-cold, stepping forward until I was standing inches from her face. I am taller than Vanessa, and standing in my three-inch heels, I towered over her. "You are in my mother’s house. You are standing on her floor. And you just brought your filth into a room filled with people who actually belong here."
"Richard!" Vanessa shrieked, turning her tear-streaked face toward my father. "Are you going to let your daughter assault me like this?! Tell her who I am!"
My father snapped out of his paralysis. He scrambled out of his seat so fast he nearly knocked his heavy oak dining chair over. His face had turned a sickly shade of grey, beads of cold sweat breaking out across his forehead.
"Victoria! What the hell is wrong with you?!" my father yelled, his voice cracking with a mix of panic and fury as he moved to step between Vanessa and me. "Have you lost your mind?! She’s a guest! She’s a senior director at my firm!"
"She’s your mistress, Dad," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the dead-silent room.
A collective gasp rippled through the table. Uncle Dave dropped his wine glass, sending red liquid staining the immaculate white tablecloth. Aunt Clara covered her mouth with both hands.
"Victoria, shut up!" my father hissed, reaching out to grab my wrist. "You don't know what you're talking about! You're making a scene at your mother's—"
"Touch me, and I slap you next," I warned him, staring into his eyes with such raw, dark hostility that his hand froze in mid-air.
I took a step past him, pointing a finger directly at Vanessa’s chest.
"You thought you were clever coming here today, didn't you, Vanessa?" I said, taking out my phone with my free hand. "You thought you’d mark your territory. You thought my mother was weak, that she’d crumble and cry in front of everyone so you could walk away feeling like the triumphant new queen of Richard’s empire."
I unlocked my phone and tapped the screen twice. A crystal-clear audio recording began to play over the dining room speakers via the house's Bluetooth system, which I had secretly paired earlier that afternoon.
My father’s voice filled the room, amplified and indisputable:
"I’ll transfer fifty thousand from the family trust into your personal account by Friday, baby. Eleanor won't notice. She never checks the offshore ledgers."
Vanessa’s sweet voice replied:
"Good. Because I'm tired of waiting in apartments you rented for me. I want the estate, Richard. I want her gone."
My father looked like he had been struck by lightning. He reached frantically for his pocket, realizing for the first time that his secondary phone—the one he thought was hidden in his briefcase—had been mirrored to my device weeks ago.
Vanessa backed toward the foyer, her eyes wild with terror as she looked around at the burning, disgusted glares of twenty family members.

"Get out," I whispered, my voice dropping into a register that chilled the air in the foyer. "If I see your face near my mother, my father, or this property ever again, those audio clips won't just play at family dinners. They will be sent to the board of directors at Sterling Financial, along with the receipts for the embezzled funds you two used for your trips to St. Barts."
Vanessa didn't say another word. She turned on her heels, leaving one of her designer shoes behind as she scrambled out the front door, slamming it behind her.
