Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Prodigy

Vanessa Cole’s hands shook so violently she dropped her digital tablet onto the glass table, the screen cracking down the center.

"Mr. Henderson, please!" Vanessa pleaded, her voice rising into a high-pitched panic as she looked around the cold, unfeeling boardroom. "I didn't know the funds were embezzled! Richard told me they were performance bonuses! I was just following instructions from my CEO!"

My father turned on her with venomous rage. "Following instructions?! You demanded those transfers, Vanessa! You threatened to go to the press if I didn't buy you the condo in South Beach!"

"You lied to me!" Vanessa screamed back, abandoning all pretense of corporate professionalism. "You told me your wife was an invalid who didn't care about the company! You told me I’d be taking over the marketing division permanently once you cleared her out!"

"Enough," my mother commanded, her single word cutting through their squabble like a sharp blade.

Both of them froze.

My mother looked down at Vanessa with a look of calm, distant pity—the kind of look one gives a mild inconvenience that has finally been cleared away.

"Miss Cole," my mother said smoothly. "Two federal marshals and representatives from the district attorney’s corporate crimes unit are waiting in the lobby downstairs. They have a warrant for your personal laptop and the frozen accounts in Miami."

Vanessa’s face went dead white. She looked at my father, expecting him to step in, to use his influence, to save her.

My father couldn't even look her in the eye. He was staring down at the termination agreement sitting on the marble table, his entire life's work disappearing into the paper shredder of his own arrogance.

"Richard..." Vanessa whispered, tears streaming down her face, ruining her neat corporate makeup. "Do something! You said you loved me!"

"Get her out of my sight," my father growled, sinking back into his chair like a defeated old man.

Two uniform security officers stepped into the boardroom, flanked by Mr. Vance, our legal counsel. Without a word, they escorted Vanessa Cole out of the room. Her high heels clicked frantically against the floor until the double doors sealed shut behind her, ending her short-lived reign over my father's life.

My mother turned her attention back to my father.

"You have one hour to clear your personal belongings from the corner office, Richard," she said softly. "The company car has been revoked. Your corporate accounts are frozen. My legal team will serve the divorce papers at your hotel by 4:00 PM."

My father looked up, his eyes bloodshot, his pride thoroughly broken. "Eleanor... after twenty-five years... you're leaving me with nothing?"

"I'm leaving you with exactly what you brought into this marriage, Richard," my mother replied, taking her seat at the head of the long marble table. "Nothing."
