Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The final signing took less than ten minutes.

With a single stroke of his pen, Richard Vance surrendered all claims to the suburban estate, the Sterling family trust, the voting stock, and the remaining liquid assets held in joint accounts. In return, my mother agreed not to press private civil charges regarding the embezzled trust funds, allowing the federal criminal case against him and Vanessa to proceed independently.

As my father picked up his cheap plastic pen to sign his name on the final line, his hand trembled so violently he could barely complete the signature.

"It's done," Mr. Vance declared, taking the signed documents and stamping them with his official seal. "Mrs. Eleanor Sterling, you are officially divorced."

My mother took a deep, quiet breath. It was as if an invisible weight that had been crushing her chest for twenty-five years had suddenly dissolved into thin air. Her posture straightened, her eyes bright and clear.

My father stood up slowly, looking at my mother with a mixture of profound regret and lingering bitterness.

"I hope you're happy, Eleanor," he said softly, his voice rough. "You got your revenge. You stripped me of everything."

"I didn't take anything from you, Richard," my mother replied, looking him dead in the eye without a trace of anger or resentment left in her voice. "You traded your family for vanity. You traded your dignity for applause from people who didn't care about you. I simply picked up the pieces you threw away."

My father turned and walked toward the exit.

As he reached the doorway, I stepped into his path one last time.

"Dad," I said softly.

He stopped, a faint, desperate glimmer of hope appearing in his eyes—as if believing, even for a second, that his daughter might offer him a gesture of reconciliation. "Victoria...?"

"Don't ever contact my mother again," I said, my voice completely flat. "And if you ever step foot on our property, I won't call a lawyer. I'll call the police."

The glimmer of hope in his eyes died instantly. He nodded once, a hollow, broken man, and walked out into the cold rain falling over the city.
