Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

Ethan looked as though he had been hit by a freight train. The arrogant smile that had defined his face for the past three years vanished completely, replaced by a hollow, sickening realization.

“No... no, no, no,” Ethan stammered, backing away from Madison as if she were a ghost. “Madison, tell me this is a setup. Tell me Claire paid this doctor off!”

Madison burst into tears, her composure crumbling into ugly, desperate sobs. “Ethan, please! Listen to me! It’s not what you think! I loved you! You were miserable with her! She was always focused on her stupid foundation, always working, always busy! I gave you what you wanted! I gave you a family!”

“Is he mine?!” Ethan screamed, his voice echoing through the entire maternity wing, drawing the attention of doctors, security guards, and dozens of patients. “Is Leo my son? Yes or no?!”

Madison buried her face in her hands, her silence ringing louder than any confession could have.

Dr. Vale stepped between Ethan and Madison, placing a firm hand on Ethan’s chest as security guards approached. “Mr. Hayes, lower your voice immediately, or security will escort you from the premises. Furthermore, as Director of St. Catherine’s, I have already filed an emergency petition with the State Medical Ethics Board. Dr. Sterling’s license has been suspended effective one hour ago, and a federal investigation into clinical forgery and medical fraud has been opened.”

Ethan dropped his hands to his sides. He looked at me—truly looked at me—for the first time in a year.

He didn't see the broken, hollow woman he had left in a small apartment above a bakery. He saw a woman standing tall, flanked by one of the most respected medical professionals in the state, holding the sharp edge of absolute truth.

“Claire...” Ethan choked out, taking a step toward me, his hands shaking. “Claire... baby, please. I... I didn't know. I swears to God I didn't know! She tricked me! She made me believe you couldn't give me a family!”

“Do not call me baby, Ethan,” I said, my voice as cold as ice. “One year ago, you served me papers three days after my doctor told me my body had failed. You took our home. You took my charity foundation. You stood in front of our friends and told them I was useless.”

“I was angry! I was foolish!” Ethan pleaded, tears of panic welling in his eyes. “We can fix this! We can void the divorce on grounds of fraud! I’ll kick Madison out of the house today! I’ll give you back the foundation! Just please... talk to me!”

May you like

I smiled softly—the same calm, unbothered smile I had given him two minutes ago.

“I’m not here to talk to you, Ethan,” I said, turning on my heel toward the elevator doors. “I’m here to take everything back.”
