Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

That evening, I sat in Dr. Adrian Vale’s private office on the top floor of St. Catherine’s Hospital. The rain tapped softly against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the glittering Atlanta skyline.

Adrian poured two cups of chamomile tea, handing one to me before taking a seat across from my desk.

“You held up remarkably well down there, Claire,” Adrian said gently, his dark eyes filled with genuine admiration. “Most people would have broken down or screamed.”

“I ran out of tears ten months ago, Adrian,” I replied, sipping the warm tea. “When I was sitting in that tiny apartment over the bakery, reading through those missing medical pages you helped me recover, I realized something. Sadness is a luxury for people who have nothing left to fight for. I had a life to reclaim.”

Adrian leaned forward, pulling out a thick blue legal folder. “Well, the fight is just beginning. My team confirmed that Dr. Sterling has already hired a criminal defense lawyer. He’s terrified. He knows that forging medical diagnostic reports carries up to twenty years in federal prison.”

“What about the foundation?” I asked.

The Hayes-Miller Foundation had been built by my sweat and tears over eight years. It funded pediatric cancer research and provided medical aid to low-income mothers. When Ethan divorced me, he used a loophole in our prenuptial agreement—claiming my 'mental instability' rendered me unfit to serve on the board—to seize control and hand the executive directorship to Madison.

“Ethan used foundation funds to purchase Madison’s luxury vehicle and pay for their private security,” Adrian noted, shaking his head in disgust. “That’s non-profit embezzlement. I spoke with Attorney Sarah Vance this afternoon. She’s filing an emergency injunction tomorrow morning to freeze all Hayes-Miller Foundation accounts and seize the main residential property.”

“And the paternity of the baby?” I asked softly.

Adrian sighed. “The court ordered an expedited DNA swab for the child today based on my affidavit. The results will take forty-eight hours. But based on Madison’s private medical files from Fairview Clinic, she was undergoing secret IVF treatments using a donor profile six weeks before she ever claimed to be pregnant with Ethan’s child.”

I shook my head, feeling a mix of pity and disgust. “She didn't just want Ethan. She wanted my life. She wanted my title, my house, my foundation, and my status.”

“And she used a innocent child as her ticket,” Adrian said softly. He reached across the table, his fingers gently closing over mine. His touch was warm, reassuring, and completely grounded. “We’re going to tear that ticket up, Claire. Step by step.”
