Chapter 6 - The Shadow of the Past

By the second month of our cohabitation, Sophie’s medical evaluations showed the first signs of genuine hope. Her ejection fraction had climbed from a critical 25% to a stable 38%. It wasn't perfect, and she was still far from out of the woods, but Dr. Aris was visibly relieved during our follow-up appointment.

"The medication is working, but more importantly, the psychological stress has plummeted," the doctor noted, looking between the two of us with a perceptive smile. "Whatever you are doing at home, keep doing it. The human heart is remarkably resilient when it feels safe."

To celebrate the good news, I arranged a small, private picnic in the backyard garden. The summer air was warm, sweet with the scent of blooming roses and damp earth. Sophie wore a simple, flowered sundress that made her look like the breathtaking woman I had fallen in love with in college.

But our happiness was abruptly interrupted when a sleek luxury sedan pulled into the gravel driveway of the cottage.

The door opened, and out stepped Richard, my former brother-in-law—Sophie’s older brother, who had always been a high-powered corporate attorney with a volatile temper. He had been out of the country during our divorce, but now that he was back, his face was contorted in absolute fury.

He marched across the lawn, ignoring me entirely, and grabbed Sophie gently by the arm. "Sophie, pack your things. You're leaving with me right now. I just found out what this monster did—abandoning you while you were sick, forcing a divorce, and now keeping you isolated in the suburbs out of some twisted sense of white-knight guilt. I’ve retained a legal team, Ethan. If you think you can manipulate my sister while she’s vulnerable, I will ruin you."
