Chapter 7 - The Trial of Devotion

Richard stared at his sister in absolute disbelief. "Sophie, he walked away from you! He left you when you were at your lowest point after the miscarriages!"
"And I let him go, Richard!" Sophie shouted back, her chest heaving as she stood her ground. "I hid my illness from him. I pushed him away because I felt hollow inside. Our marriage died because we both stopped talking, not because Ethan is a monster. But when he found me alone in that hospital hallway, he didn't hesitate. He threw away his entire life, his routine, his comfort, just to carry me when I couldn't walk. If you love me, Richard, you will get back in your car and let us heal in peace."
The raw intensity of her defense left Richard completely speechless. He looked at Sophie, then looked at me, seeing the protective grip I maintained on her waist, ensuring she didn't collapse from the exertion. The corporate attorney slowly deflated, realizing that the dynamic between us was far more complex than a simple story of abandonment and revenge.
"If he hurts you again, Sophie... I will take everything he owns," Richard muttered, though the threat lacked its previous venom. He turned and walked back to his car, leaving the two of us alone in the quiet afternoon light.
The confrontation, though exhausting, served as a profound catalyst. That evening, as the stars began to pierce the velvet sky over Naperville, Sophie walked into the guest room where I was folding laundry.

She didn't say a word. She simply reached out, took the shirt from my hands, and dropped it onto the bed. Then she stepped into my arms, burying her face in the crook of my neck.
"I don't want to live in the past anymore, Ethan," she whispered, her voice warm against my skin. "The divorce papers might say we are single, but my heart knows exactly who it belongs to. Come back to the master bedroom. Come back to me."
