Moving back into the master bedroom wasn't a return to our old marriage; it was the foundation of an entirely new paradigm. We spent the next three months learning the new architecture of our relationship. We established strict rules: no burying emotions in work, no silent treatments, and absolute transparency about every fear, no matter how small or ugly it felt.
I continued my meticulous care of her health, but it no longer felt like a clinical duty. It became a beautiful, daily ritual of devotion. I massaged her swollen ankles, brushed her thick, growing hair, and read her favorite poetry aloud until she drifted off to sleep each night, tucked safely against my chest.
By the six-month mark, we returned to St. Vincent Medical Center for her comprehensive structural heart evaluation. The tension in the waiting room was palpable; this test would determine whether she would be placed on the active organ transplant list or if her native heart was strong enough to sustain a normal life.
Dr. Aris walked into the consultation room holding a large manila folder, a look of profound amazement on his face.
"I’ve been practicing cardiology for twenty-five years, and I rarely use the word 'miracle,'" the doctor said, turning the monitor toward us to show the latest ultrasound imagery. "But the myocardial remodeling has entirely reversed. The enlargement is gone, the tissue inflammation has subsided, and your ejection fraction is at a perfectly healthy 55%. Sophie, your heart has completely healed."

Sophie burst into tears, covering her mouth as she sobbed with pure, unadulterated relief. I pulled her into my lap, crushing her against my chest, laughing through my own tears as the heavy, dark cloud that had hovered over our heads for three long years evaporated into thin air.
As we walked out of the hospital, the very place where I had found her broken and fading two hundred days prior, the autumn wind felt crisp, clean, and full of infinite possibilities.
