Chapter 2 - The Fall of Vance Global

The morning sun over Manhattan offered no warmth to Julian Vance.
He sat in his corner office on the 45th floor of the Vance Global tower, staring blankly at the glass of whiskey in his hand. It was 8:00 AM. His phone had been ringing continuously for three hours.
The door to his office slammed open. His chief operating officer, Marcus, burst in without knocking, his necktie undone, his face red with panic.
"Julian! Have you looked at the news?!" Marcus slammed an iPad onto the glass desk.
The headliner on Bloomberg was written in bold, unforgiving font:
STERLING MARITIME TERMINATES ALL TALKS WITH VANCE GLOBAL; SHORT SELLS VANCE STOCK BY $400 MILLION.
Julian’s whiskey glass shattered on the desk. "He did what?!"
"It's a bloodbath!" Marcus yelled, pulling at his hair. "The market opened twenty minutes ago and Vance Global shares are down forty-five percent! Sterling didn't just reject our proposal—he publicly announced that Sterling Maritime is launching its own logistics wing, led by..." Marcus choked on the name.
"Led by who?!" Julian roared, standing up so fast his leather chair crashed into the window behind him.
"Led by Sarah Vance—sorry, Sarah Sterling," Marcus stammered. "She just bought thirty percent of our primary supplier's shares through her personal foundation. Julian... she's choking our supply chains! We won't have enough capital to cover our quarterly debt obligations!"
Julian felt the room spin. Sarah? Sarah, who used to fuss over the price of organic eggs? Sarah, who spent her weekends volunteering at the local animal shelter?
"She doesn't know logistics!" Julian spat, his voice cracking with desperation. "I taught her everything she knows!"
"She has an MBA from Columbia, Julian!" Marcus screamed back. "She gave up her career fifteen years ago so you could build this place! She knows our entire operational matrix because she wrote it!"
Before Julian could process the crushing weight of that truth, his private line rang.
He answered with shaking hands. "Hello?"
"Julian, darling," Tiffany’s voice whined over the speaker. "The credit card you gave me just got declined at Chanel. What is going on? The cashier looked at me like I was a homeless person!"
"Shut up, Tiffany!" Julian screamed into the receiver. "My company is dying and you're complaining about handbag shopping?!"
"Don't you raise your voice at me!" Tiffany snapped back. "I read the papers! Everyone is laughing at you! They're calling you the biggest idiot in Wall Street history! You traded a woman who just married a trillionaire for me, and now you can't even pay for my shoes!"
"Get out of my apartment," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with dark rage.
"Gladly! The place smells like cheap cigars anyway!" The line went dead.
Julian dropped the phone onto the desk. He walked slowly to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the ant-like cars on Wall Street below.
Three years ago, he had stood in his living room, looking at Sarah’s tear-stained face, feeling like a god. He had believed he was the sole author of his success. He had convinced himself that she was dead weight, holding back his ascension into the ultra-elite.
Now he realized the horrifying truth.
She hadn't been the anchor holding him down.
She had been the anchor keeping his ship from capsizing in the storm.
And now that she was gone, the ocean was swallowing him whole.
His secretary’s voice crackled over the intercom, nervous and trembling. "Mr. Vance... there are federal agents from the SEC in the lobby. They have a subpoena for your offshore accounts."
Julian closed his eyes.
Across town, in the penthouse suite of the Sterling Tower, Sarah sat on a plush velvet sofa, sipping decaf tea while looking out over Central Park.
Alexander walked up behind her, placing his broad hands gently on her shoulders, leaning down to kiss her temple.
"The SEC just executed the warrant on Vance Global's hidden accounts in Bermuda," Alexander murmured. "He'll be bankrupt by Friday. Indicted by next month."
Sarah took a slow sip of her tea, watching a red-tailed hawk soar over the trees below.

"I didn't want to destroy him, Alex," she said softly.
"I know, my love," Alexander replied, resting his hand over her baby bump, feeling the firm, healthy kick of their unborn child. "You didn't destroy him. You just stopped protecting him from himself."
