Chapter 4 - A Mother’s Revenge

Six months later.

The quiet town of Greenwich, Connecticut, was blanketed in a layer of pristine white snow.

In a private wing of the Greenwich Memorial Hospital, the atmosphere was one of absolute luxury and tight security. Armed guards in discrete suits paced the hallways while the world's leading obstetricians monitored every metric on digital screens.

Sarah lay in a king-sized hospital bed, her face flushed, holding a small, swaddled bundle in her arms.

Standing beside her, holding her hand with a tenderness that shocked his corporate rivals, was Alexander Sterling.

"He has your eyes," Alexander whispered, his voice thick with emotion as he looked down at his son.

"He has your chin, Alex," Sarah smiled softly, tired but glowing with an angelic beauty. "Stubborn. Just like his father."

"Leo," Alexander said gently, touching the baby’s tiny cheek with his finger. "Leo Alexander Sterling."

The heavy wooden doors of the private suite pushed open softly.

Alexander’s mother, Duchess Victoria Sterling, stepped into the room. A woman of legendary poise and terrifying social influence, Victoria had initially been skeptical when her son married a divorced woman with no aristocratic title.

But standing there now, Victoria walked past Alexander, leaning down to look at Sarah and the newborn baby.

Victoria pulled a wooden velvet box from her purse and opened it, revealing the famous Sterling Star—a legendary hundred-carat sapphire necklace that had belonged to the family for three centuries.

"Victoria..." Sarah began softly. "I can't accept—"

"Quiet, my dear," Victoria commanded gently, placing her hand on Sarah’s forehead. "You have brought a healthy, beautiful heir into this family. More importantly... you brought light back into my son’s eyes. You are a Sterling now. The undisputed matriarch of our future."

Victoria glared at Alexander. "And if you ever disrespect this wonderful woman, Alexander, I will disinherit you myself."

Alexander laughed—a rare, genuine sound. "I wouldn't dare, Mother."

While the Sterling family celebrated the birth of their prince, thirty miles away in a federal holding facility in New Jersey, Julian Vance sat in a four-by-eight cell.

He wore an orange jumpsuit. His hair was shaved, his face thin and pale.

The small television mounted in the common room was tuned to CNBC.

"Breaking News," the anchor announced. "Sarah Sterling, wife of billionaire Alexander Sterling, has just given birth to a healthy baby boy in Connecticut. In celebration of the birth, the Sterling Foundation has announced a five-hundred-million-dollar donation to maternal health research nationwide."

Julian stared at the screen.

The image shifted to a photograph of Sarah and Alexander leaving the hospital, surrounded by security, Sarah holding the tiny baby wrapped in a cashmere blanket, smiling brightly under the flashing cameras.

She looked radiant. Powerful. Loved.

Julian dropped his head into his hands and began to weep silently.

A fellow inmate, a hardened bank robber sitting on the bench across from him, grunted. "Hey, Vance. Isn't that the lady you used to be married to?"

Julian didn't answer. He couldn't.

"Man," the inmate chuckled, shaking his head. "You gotta be the dumbest guy on the planet. You traded royalty for garbage, and now you're eating cold beans in a ditch."

The truth of those words tore through Julian’s chest deeper than any knife could ever cut.
