Chapter 7 - The Mastermind’s Legacy

The Valerius-Sterling merger was the deal of the century.
In the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, the international elite gathered to celebrate the union of the two greatest shipping and financial dynasties in modern history.
Sarah stood at the center of the room, looking like absolute royalty. She wore a sweeping burgundy velvet dress, her hair styled in soft waves, the Sterling Star sapphire glowing brilliantly at her throat.
Beside her, four-year-old Leo, dressed in a sharp little navy tuxedo, was happily eating a chocolate strawberry while Alexander’s brother, Cassian, showed him how to operate a miniature drone.
"He's going to be a menace, you know," Alexander laughed, stepping up behind Sarah and sliding his hands around her waist.
"He takes after his uncles," Sarah smiled, resting her head against Alexander’s chest. "And his father."
Alexander kissed her shoulder. "Are you happy, my love?"
Sarah turned in his arms, looking up into his deep gray eyes—eyes that had given her safety, love, and absolute devotion when she had felt most discarded by the world.
"I didn't know life could be like this, Alex," she whispered genuinely. "I thought my life was over five years ago. I thought I was defective."
"You were never defective," Alexander said fiercely, his voice heavy with emotion. "You were just trapped in a small, foolish world built by a small, foolish man. You were meant for an empire, Sarah."
Across the ballroom, Alexander’s chief legal advisor, Richard, approached them, carrying a tablet.
"Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling," Richard bowed politely. "Pardon the interruption."
"What is it, Richard?" Alexander asked.
"Julian Vance’s parole hearing is scheduled for next month," Richard reported softly. "Under the terms of his sentence, his release is contingent upon whether Mrs. Sterling files an objection regarding outstanding civil judgments."
Sarah looked at the screen, seeing Julian’s mugshot—gaunt, aged, beaten by time.
She felt no anger. No desire for revenge. The pain he had caused her felt like a story about another person in another lifetime.
"Tell the parole board I have no objection," Sarah said calmly.
Alexander raised an eyebrow, looking at her with quiet pride. "Are you sure, my love? He tried to undermine your dignity."
"He succeeded in destroying himself, Alex," Sarah replied softly. "Holding onto hatred for him would be like keeping a ghost in my house. Let him out. Let him live his small, quiet life."
Richard nodded respectfully. "Understood, Mrs. Sterling. I will clear the paperwork tomorrow."
As Richard walked away, Alexander pulled Sarah closer, spinning her gently as the orchestra began to play a soft waltz.

"You are remarkable," Alexander murmured, kissing her lips under the golden light of the chandeliers.
"No," Sarah smiled into the kiss. "I'm just finally home."
