Chapter 4 - The Showdown at the Gate

The heavy iron gates of the Anderson estate stood twenty feet tall, mounted into reinforced stone pillars. Beyond the gate, parked sideways across the brick driveway, was Marcus Vance’s rusted sedan.
Standing beside the vehicle were two uniformed officers from the Atlanta Police Department, looking thoroughly uncomfortable.
Marcus was screaming at the top of his lungs, slamming his fist against the iron bars of the gate.
"Sarah! Tommy!" Marcus roared, his voice echoing across the quiet neighborhood streets. "Come out here right now! You don't belong in that rich man's playground! I'm your father! I'm your legal guardian!"
Inside the security booth, the guards kept their hands near their holstered sidearms, watching the monitoring screens.
A sleek black SUV pulled up from the main house, stopping ten feet behind the gate. The rear door opened, and Richard Anderson stepped out into the chilly afternoon air.
Beside him walked Evelyn Vance—a sharp, impeccably dressed woman in a navy suit carrying a thick leather briefcase.
Marcus’s eyes narrowed as he saw Richard approach. A cruel, triumphant sneer spread across his face.
"So you're the big millionaire!" Marcus barked through the iron bars. "The guy who likes to steal people's kids off the street!"
Richard stopped three feet from the gate, his hands buried calmly in his coat pockets. His face was an unreadable mask of absolute stone.
"Mr. Vance," Richard said, his voice quiet, clear, and perfectly controlled. "You are currently trespassing on private property, having damaged my perimeter intercom system. I suggest you step back before my legal team adds destruction of property to your existing charges."
One of the police officers stepped forward, clearing his throat nervously. "Mr. Anderson... we received a call from Mr. Vance claiming that his stepchildren were abducted from his custody four days ago."
Evelyn Vance stepped forward before Richard could even answer. She opened her briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of certified legal documents, and handed them directly through the bars to the police officer.
"Officer," Evelyn stated with razor-sharp authority. "I am Evelyn Vance, senior partner at Vance & Associates. What you have in your hand is a certified order from Fulton County Family Court Judge Harrison, issued three days ago."
The officer quickly flipped through the pages, his eyes widening as he read the judge's signature.
"This order grants temporary emergency custody of Sarah and Thomas Vance to Richard E. Anderson," Evelyn explained coolly. "It also includes a absolute restraining order prohibiting Marcus Vance from approaching within one thousand yards of the children or their temporary legal guardian. If you do not arrest Mr. Vance immediately for violating a court order, you will be cited in a federal misconduct lawsuit by five o'clock today."
The police officer's face went white. He immediately turned to Marcus, grabbing his arm. "Alright, Vance, step back. You didn't tell us there was a judge's order!"
"Wait a minute!" Marcus yelled, thrashing against the officer's grip. "That order is fake! He bought that judge! He's a billionaire! He paid off the courts to steal my kids!"
Marcus leaned his face against the iron bars, glaring directly into Richard's eyes with pure, venomous hatred.
"You think you can hide behind your lawyers, rich boy?!" Marcus spat out. "You think a piece of paper is gonna keep me away from them?! I know where they sleep! I know who they are! I'm gonna burn this whole place to the ground!"
Richard took one slow, deliberate step closer to the gate. He leaned down slightly, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying whisper that only Marcus could hear.
"You listen to me very carefully, Marcus," Richard said, his eyes burning with an icy, lethal intensity. "Every dollar you have ever touched, every crime you have ever committed, and every dark corner you have ever hidden in—I own it now. I have fifty attorneys on my payroll, and I will spend every dime of my fortune ensuring you spend the rest of your miserable life in a maximum-security prison cell. If you ever speak their names again, I will destroy you."
Marcus stared at Richard, the cold, absolute promise in the millionaire's eyes causing a sudden spike of real, primal fear to shoot through his spine. For the first time in his life, Marcus realized he wasn't dealing with a frightened woman or helpless children. He was dealing with a monster far larger and far wealthier than himself.
The two police officers forced Marcus's arms behind his back, clicking steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for violation of a protective order and felony trespassing," the officer declared, shoving him into the back of the police cruiser.
As the police car pulled away, its sirens blaring into the distance, Evelyn closed her briefcase with a satisfied snap.
"That will buy us seventy-two hours, Richard," Evelyn said, turning to her boss. "The magistrate will set bail tomorrow morning. Marcus will likely call his street contacts to raise the ten-thousand-dollar bond."

Richard looked down the long driveway toward the main house, where he could see Sarah standing near the second-floor window, watching the gates with wide, anxious eyes.
"He won't get bail, Evelyn," Richard said coldly. "Find every debt he owes, every illegal deal he’s ever made, and every victim he’s ever threatened. I want Marcus Vance buried under so many indictments that he never sees the sun again."
