Chapter 8 - The Weight of Justice

Two months later.

The Fulton County Criminal Courthouse was bathed in the crisp, cool sunlight of early winter.

Inside Courtroom 4B, the trial of State of Georgia v. Marcus Vance had reached its final, decisive hour.

Marcus Vance sat at the defense table, wearing an orange county jumpsuit, his legs locked in heavy iron shackles. His face bore a permanent, jagged scar across his cheekbone where Sarah’s brass bookend had struck him. He looked utterly broken, gaunt, and defeated.

Sitting across the room at the prosecution table was Evelyn Vance, representing the state alongside the District Attorney.

In the front row of the gallery sat Richard Anderson, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit. Beside him sat Sarah and Tommy.

Sarah wore a simple navy blue dress with a white collar. She looked healthy, composed, and unshakeable. Her hand rested confidently inside Richard’s broad palm.

Judge Harrison slammed his heavy wooden gavel down onto the block, restoring absolute silence to the crowded courtroom.

"Will the defendant please stand," Judge Harrison commanded sternly.

Marcus groaned as he stood up, his iron chains clanking loudly against the wooden floorboards.

"Marcus Vance," Judge Harrison began, reading from the certified verdict documents. "A jury of your peers has found you guilty on all counts: Felony Home Invasion, Attempted Aggravated Assault, Felony Child Endangerment, Violation of a Protective Order, and Extortion."

The judge set the papers down, looking over his spectacles at the convicted criminal with cold, absolute disgust.

"Your continuous, relentless terrorization of these two young children represents the absolute worst of human nature," Judge Harrison declared, his booming voice filling the room. "You sought to exploit their vulnerability, steal their mother's legacy, and destroy their chance at a safe life."

Judge Harrison picked up his gavel.

"It is the sentence of this court that you serve twenty-five years at the Augusta State Medical Prison, without the possibility of parole for the first twenty years. You are permanently forbidden from contacting Sarah Vance or Thomas Vance, directly or through third parties, for the remainder of your natural life."

BANG!

The heavy gavel struck the block, sealing Marcus's fate forever.

Marcus didn't scream. He didn't yell. He simply closed his eyes as the court marshals grabbed his arms, dragging him out through the side door toward the holding cell.

As the heavy steel door slammed shut behind Marcus, Sarah let out a long, slow breath—a breath she felt like she had been holding for four terrifying years.

She turned to look at Richard.

Richard smiled down at her, giving her hand a gentle, reassuring squeeze. "It's over, Sarah. He's never coming back."
