Chapter 9 - The Promise of Tomorrow

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in full, glorious color across the North Hills estate. The gardens were ablaze with blooming tulips, white dogwood blossoms, and lush green lawns.

Near the broad stone patio behind the main house, a long wooden dining table was set for a festive afternoon celebration.

Tommy, now seven years old, was running across the lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Richard had adopted for him two weeks ago. His laughter echoed bright and clear across the grounds—the sound of a child who had completely forgotten how to be afraid.

Sarah sat at the wooden table, working on a sketch in her leather-bound drawing pad. Her artistic talent, nurtured by her teachers at St. Jude's Academy, had blossomed remarkably. She was currently drawing a portrait of the estate's main house, illuminated by sunlight.

Richard walked out onto the patio carrying a tray of fresh lemonade and fruit tarts. He was dressed casually in a linen shirt and slacks, looking lighter, happier, and ten years younger than the lonely man who had stood under an umbrella on a rain-slicked street months ago.

He set the tray down on the table, leaning over to look at Sarah's drawing.

"That's incredible, Sarah," Richard said genuinely. "The perspective on the stone arches is perfect."

Sarah smiled, setting her pencil down. "Thanks, Richard. Mr. Harrison says I might get accepted into the youth gallery exhibit this summer."

"There's no 'might' about it," Richard smiled, taking a seat beside her. "You're the best artist in your class."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a thick, legal-sized envelope bearing the official seal of the Family Court Division.

Sarah’s heart skipped a beat, though not from fear. She looked at the envelope, then looked up into Richard's warm gray eyes.

"Is that...?" Sarah whispered, her breath catching in her throat.

"The final adoption decree," Richard said softly, opening the envelope and sliding the signed document toward her. "As of ten o'clock this morning, you and Tommy are legally my daughter and son. Your official names are Sarah Vance Anderson and Thomas Vance Anderson."

Sarah picked up the document, her fingers tracing the gold foil seal at the bottom.

Final Order of Adoption... Granted to Richard E. Anderson...

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy welled up in Sarah’s eyes, spilling over her lashes and running down her smiling cheeks.

She looked up at the man who had pulled them out of the rain, who had fought off monsters for them, who had given them a home, a future, and a family.

"Dad..." Sarah whispered, the word feeling strange, miraculous, and infinitely beautiful on her tongue.

Richard’s eyes filled with tears of his own. He opened his arms, pulling his daughter into a warm, tight embrace.

"My daughter," Richard whispered back, holding her close as the spring breeze rustled the leaves of the towering oak trees above them.
