Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

Two years later.
The sun was setting over the Hudson River, painting the sky in brilliant hues of violet, orange, and gold.
At the Riverdale estate, the large back porch was set for a summer evening dinner. The smell of grilled steaks, fresh herbs, and warm apple pie filled the air.
Dr. Thomas Whitaker sat in a comfortable wicker chair, laughing as seven-year-old Lily showed him her latest art project—a colorful painting of a family standing in front of a big house under a rainbow, featuring a little girl, a mommy, a daddy, a fluffy dog, and a tiny baby in a crib.
"It's magnificent, Lily," Thomas smiled, adjusting his reading glasses. "You inherited your mother's talent."
"And she inherited her father's stubbornness," Rebecca added playfully, walking out onto the porch carrying a tray of fresh lemonade.
She looked radiant. Her hair was tied in a loose braid, and her soft summer dress draped gently over her glowing figure—she was seven months pregnant with their second child, a boy.
James walked out behind her, carrying their newborn puppy's water bowl, stepping up to wrap his arms around her waist from behind, resting his hands gently on her baby bump.
"How are you feeling, sweetheart?" James whispered into her ear, kissing her cheek.
"Perfect," Rebecca replied, leaning back against his chest. "Absolutely perfect."
Lily ran up to them, holding a small plastic piggy bank filled to the brim with shiny coins and dollar bills she had saved from her allowance and chores.
She marched right up to James with a very serious expression on her face.
"Daddy?" Lily asked.
James knelt down on one knee, looking at his daughter with endless affection. "Yes, my little princess?"
Lily set the heavy piggy bank in his hands.
"What's this?" James asked, amused.
"That's my payment," Lily declared proudly, pointing a tiny finger at him. "Remember when I was four at the hospital? I promised the doctor I would pay everything when I grew up. But since you paid the hospital bill and bought Mommy her medicine, this is for you!"
James stared at the piggy bank, then looked up at Rebecca, whose eyes were filled with tears of pure warmth.
He pulled Lily into his arms, lifting her high into the air as she giggled softly, before bringing her close to his heart.
"Lily bug," James said, his voice thick with emotion, "you paid me back the very second you walked into my life. You gave me a family. You gave me back your mommy. There isn't enough money in the world to buy what you gave me."
"So... can I buy ice cream with it instead?" Lily asked hopefully.
James laughed, a bright, joyous sound that echoed across the quiet garden. "Yes, sweetheart. You can buy all the ice cream in the world."
As the stars began to twinkle in the evening sky, the family sat together at the long wooden table. Laughter, warmth, and peace filled the night air.

James held Rebecca’s hand under the table, their fingers intertwined, as their daughter chattered happily beside them.
The storm was long gone. The promise was kept. And their story had finally found its home.
