Chapter 4 - The Hospital Room Reunion

At 7:00 AM, the morning light broke through the blinds of the ICU room.
James sat in a chair beside Rebecca’s bed, holding her left hand gently in his. Her skin was warm now, the IV fluids restoring her circulation.
A tiny flutter of her eyelids caught his attention.
James leaned forward instantly, his chest tight with anticipation. "Becca?"
Rebecca let out a faint moan. Her brow furrowed as she slowly opened her eyes. The room was blurry, smelling of antiseptic. She blinked several times, her green eyes adjusting to the light, until they landed on the man sitting beside her.
She froze.
"J... James?" her voice was a rough whisper, barely audible behind the oxygen mask.
"Don't try to talk too much, Becca," James said softly, his thumb gently smoothing the back of her hand. "You're safe. You're in the hospital."
Panic suddenly flashed in her eyes. She pulled her hand back, trying to sit up, but the pain in her abdomen made her gasp. "Lily! Where is my baby?! Where is Lily?!"
"She's fine! She's safe!" James quickly reassured her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "She's in the room right next door, sleeping. She wasn't hurt, Becca. You saved her."
Rebecca sank back against the pillows, tears pooling in the corners of her eyes as she let out a shaky breath. "Thank God... thank God..."
She looked at James again, her expression guarded, filled with an ancient pain that tore at his soul. "Why are you here, James? How did you find us?"
"I was in the hallway when they brought you in," James said softly. "Lily was begging the doctor to save you. She told him her name was Lily Morgan."
Rebecca pulled her gaze away, looking at the white ceiling. "You shouldn't be here. Your father... if he finds out—"
"I know everything, Rebecca," James interrupted, his voice thick with emotion.
Rebecca turned back to him, startled.
"I know what Richard threatened five years ago," James confessed, tears glistening in his eyes. "I know about the lawsuits he threatened against your father. I know why you left. And I know Lily is my daughter."
Rebecca began to cry silently, her shoulders shaking. "I had to leave, James. He was going to destroy my dad's life. He showed me photos of your father's lawyers preparing to bankrupt us. I couldn't let my family be ruined because of me. And when I found out I was pregnant three weeks after I left... I was so terrified he would take her away from me."
"He will never touch either of you again," James said with fierce conviction, leaning in and taking both her hands in his. "I spent five years believing you stopped loving me. But learning the truth... Becca, I never stopped. Not for a single day."
The door opened quietly, and a tiny head poked into the room.
"Mommy?" Lily whispered.
Rebecca’s face lit up with radiant joy. "Lily! My sweet girl!"
Lily ran across the room, carefully climbing onto the side of the bed to avoid the tubes, throwing her arms around Rebecca’s neck. "Mommy! You woke up! The nice man said you were going to be okay!"
Rebecca buried her face in Lily's small neck, kissing her hair repeatedly. "I'm okay, baby. Mommy is right here."
Lily looked over at James, then back at her mother. "Mommy, he has a big car with fuzzy seats, and he bought me hot chocolate. Is he a superhero?"

Rebecca looked up at James through her tears, seeing the deep love and adoration in his eyes—the same look he used to give her years ago under the autumn trees in Central Park.
"No, sweetheart," Rebecca whispered softly, reaching out to touch James's face. "He's your daddy."
