Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Broken Pieces

Spring arrived in New York, bringing warm breezes and blooming cherry blossoms across the city.

The wedding of James Carter and Rebecca Morgan was held at the historic Metropolitan Museum of Art—a private, breathtaking ceremony surrounded by centuries of timeless masterpieces.

There were no media cameras inside, no corporate sponsors, and no cold aristocrats. The guest list consisted only of true friends: Dr. Thomas Whitaker, who had saved Rebecca’s life; Marcus and his security team; gallery workers; and local families from Rebecca's old neighborhood in Queens.

Lily served as the flower girl, wearing a white lace dress with a tiny flower crown, proudly walking down the aisle tossing rose petals while holding Barnaby Junior on a satin leash.

When the heavy wooden doors at the back of the hall opened, James felt his breath leave his lungs once again.

Rebecca walked down the aisle on the arm of Dr. Thomas Whitaker, who had proudly agreed to walk her down in honor of her late father. Her wedding gown was a masterpiece of classic satin and handmade lace, flowing behind her like liquid pearls. Her copper hair was swept back, highlighting her radiant smile.

As Thomas placed Rebecca’s hand in James's, the veteran surgeon whispered softly, "Take care of her, son."

"With my life," James promised.

They exchanged vows they had written themselves—promises spoken not from corporate obligation, but from the depths of two souls that had survived the storm and found their way back to each other.

"I promise to hold your hand through every dark hallway," James said, his voice trembling with emotion as he placed the ring on her finger. "I promise to protect our family, to honor your strength, and to love you more with every passing day."

"And I promise," Rebecca replied, her green eyes shining with absolute devotion, "that no matter how damaged the story seems, I will always choose you to help me write the ending."

"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the officiant declared. "You may kiss the bride."

James pulled Rebecca into his arms, dipping her slightly as he kissed her to the thunderous applause and cheers of their loved ones.
