Chapter 4 - Safe House and Stolen Lives

Thirty minutes later, the dark SUV belonging to Julian Vance was tearing down the quiet back roads away from the city, driven by Nora, while Arthur lay in the passenger seat, his hand tightly holding hers across the center console.
They had picked up June from the bungalow, packing two small bags with essential documents, clothes, and June’s favorite stuffed rabbit, before abandoning Nora’s house forever.
In the back seat, June sat wide-eyed, wrapped in a warm blanket, watching the man in the front seat through the rear-view mirror.
"Are you my dad?" June asked quietly into the dark interior of the car.
Arthur turned his head slowly, his breath hitching as he looked at the small girl sitting in the back. The shadow of pain on his face melted into absolute, overwhelming love.
"Yes, June," Arthur said, his voice soft and thick with emotion. "I am your dad. And I am so, so sorry it took me this long to find you."
June looked at him for a long moment, then looked down at her mismatched pink and white shoe laces. "Mom said my dad was a prince who got lost in a dark forest."
Arthur let out a soft, choked laugh, a tear escaping down his bruised cheek. "Your mom is very generous. I was just a man who got trapped by bad people. But you found me, June. You brought me back."
They drove two hours north, arriving at a secluded log cabin hidden deep within the pine forests of Blue Ridge. It was a property Arthur had purchased under a fake name years before his disappearance—a secret contingency plan he had never shared with anyone in his family, except for a private notes file he had kept locked in an encrypted drive.
Inside the cabin, the air was dry and smelled of old pine wood. Arthur collapsed onto the leather sofa while Nora rushed to get the medical kit from the bathroom.
For an hour, while June fell asleep on a small cot in the corner, Nora tended to Arthur’s wounds. She washed the mud from his face, disinfected the deep cuts on his arms, and carefully bandaged his broken ribs with tight medical wraps. Every time her soft fingers touched his skin, Arthur closes his eyes, letting out a long sigh of absolute peace.
"What happened seven years ago, Arthur?" Nora asked softly as she wrapped his shoulder where the bullet had grazed him. "Julian told everyone you stole fifty million dollars from the family trust and fled to Switzerland."
Arthur opened his eyes, his gray gaze cold with remembered anger. "It was the night I was coming to propose to you, Nora. I had the ring in my pocket. Julian invited me to his office to celebrate my promotion to CEO. He spiked my drink with a paralytic agent."
Nora gasped, her hands pausing on his bandage.
"When I woke up, I was locked inside a private psychiatric facility in upstate New York," Arthur continued softly. "Julian used forged signatures and bribed doctors to declare me legally insane and incompetent. He took over the company, seized my inheritance, and systematically erased my existence. He kept me drugged for six years... until three months ago, when a new orderly accidentally left a service key near my cell."
"You spent three months hiding?"
"I spent three months walking on foot across three states, dodging his private investigators," Arthur said, reaching up to take Nora’s hand and bringing it to his lips. "Because I knew if I went to the police, Julian’s political connections would have me thrown right back into that facility or killed. I only had one goal: to reach this city and find out if you were still alive."
"He kept us poor, Arthur," Nora whispered, tears burning her eyes. "He paid my landlord just enough to keep us from being evicted, but he made sure I could never get a proper job. He wanted me desperate. He wanted me to eventually give up and marry him."

Arthur’s face turned stone-cold. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the silver pen drive Nora had taken from Julian’s suit.
"He won't ever touch either of you again," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a deadly calm. "This drive contains Julian’s private encrypted access codes. He kept it on his person at all times. Tomorrow, the world finds out who the real monster is."
