Chapter 5 - The Shadow of Vance Financial

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the morning news was dominated by a shocking breaking story.
Julian Gregory, acting CEO of Vance Financial, had been found tied up in the mud of an abandoned brick yard, suffering from severe hypothermia and head trauma. His private security guards had been arrested by local police after an anonymous tip led officers to the scene, where illegal firearms and restrained medical transport equipment were recovered.
In the quiet kitchen of the cabin, Arthur sat at the wooden table, a laptop open in front of him, connected to a secure satellite network.
His face was still pale and bruised, but dressed in clean clothes, with his dark hair washed and combed back, the powerful, brilliant corporate strategist was re-emerging.
"He's panicking," Arthur said, monitoring the stock feeds for Vance Financial. "Julian’s legal team is claiming he was attacked by unknown assailants, but the company's stock has already dropped twelve percent since the market opened."
Nora poured three cups of warm milk and coffee, placing one beside him. "Can he trace us here?"
"No," Arthur said firmly. "This property is held under a trust that predates my father's death. But we can't stay on the defensive forever, Nora. Julian still controls the company board, the corporate bank accounts, and the security forces."
June walked into the kitchen, rubbing her eyes, wearing an oversized sweater of Arthur’s that hung down to her knees. She walked straight over to Arthur’s chair, paused for a second, and then climbed right onto his lap, leaning her head against his chest.
Arthur’s breath caught in his throat. He wrapped his arms gently around her small body, holding her like she was made of precious glass.
"Good morning, June bug," he whispered softly, using the nickname Nora had told him she loved.
"Are we staying here forever?" June asked, looking up at his bruised jaw.
"No, sweetie," Arthur smiled gently, brushing a lock of hair from her eyes. "We are going to fix everything so we can go home—to a real home, with a garden and as many butterflies as you want."
Suddenly, the encrypted satellite phone on the table chimed.
Arthur answered it, placing it on speakerphone. "Speak."
"Arthur?" a crisp, authoritative female voice spoke through the speaker. "Is that really you?"
Arthur recognized the voice instantly. It was Evelyn Vance—his late father’s sister, the formidable matriarch who held forty percent of the voting shares in Vance Financial, but who had retired to London five years ago after falling out with Julian.
"Aunt Evelyn," Arthur said warmly. "It's been a long time."
"My God, Arthur!" Evelyn gasped over the line. "I just received an anonymous encrypted email containing bank statements, medical detention records, and offshore transfer logs bearing Julian’s private signature. Did you send this?"
"I did," Arthur replied. "Julian kidnapped me seven years ago, Evelyn. He drugged me, locked me away, and stole the company. He tried to kill me last night."
A heavy, furious pause echoed from the other end of the line.
"That miserable, treacherous little leech," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into an icy rage. "I knew his mother’s blood would tell eventually. Where are you, Arthur?"
"Safe. With Nora and my daughter."
May you like
"A daughter?" Evelyn’s voice softened instantly, replaced by fierce aristocratic protectiveness. "You have a child? Arthur... tell me what you need. I still hold the majority proxy on the board. If we call an emergency shareholder meeting, we can strip Julian of his voting rights before Friday."
"I don't just want him stripped of voting rights, Evelyn," Arthur said, his eyes narrowing with icy resolve. "I want him in federal prison for the rest of his life. And I need you in New York by tomorrow morning."
