Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Trap

Forty-eight hours later.
The glittering sixty-story glass tower of Vance Financial Headquarters dominated the Manhattan skyline. Inside the executive boardroom on the top floor, twenty high-ranking board members, corporate lawyers, and major investors sat around a massive oval mahogany table.
At the head of the table sat Julian Gregory.
He wore a pristine black suit, but his neck was covered by a high collar to hide the dark purple bruises left by Arthur’s hands. His right arm was in a medical sling, and his eyes were bloodshot and erratic.
"This emergency meeting is an outrage!" Julian shouted, slamming his left palm onto the table. "I am the CEO of this firm! My legal team is handling the recent... unfortunate security breach! We do not need a vote of confidence!"
"Sit down, Julian," a sharp, aristocratic voice rang out from the back of the room.
The heavy mahogany doors opened, and Evelyn Vance walked into the boardroom, wearing a tailored black dress coat and pearl necklace, flanked by four federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission and two NYPD detectives.
Julian turned pale. "Evelyn? What are you doing here? You're supposed to be in London!"
"I came back to clean the grease out of my family's house," Evelyn said coldly, stepping to the side. "And I brought the rightful CEO of Vance Financial with me."
The room gasped as Arthur Vance walked through the doors.
He wore an immaculate navy blue suit. Though small bruises were still visible along his jaw, his posture was imposing, powerful, and absolute. Beside him walked Nora, wearing an elegant dark green dress, her chin held high, holding Arthur’s hand with quiet, unshakeable pride.
"Arthur?!" several board members gasped, standing up from their chairs in total shock. "He's alive?!"
"This is an imposter!" Julian shrieked, backing away toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows behind his desk. "Arthur Vance died seven years ago! Security! Remove these people!"
"The security detail on this floor has already been replaced by federal marshals, Julian," Arthur said smoothly, his voice echoing clearly across the silent boardroom.
Arthur stepped up to the head of the table, placing the silver pen drive onto the center digital projector.
Instantly, the wall-sized screens in the boardroom lit up, displaying hundreds of pages of unsealed evidence: offshore bank transfers, forged psychiatric committal papers, wiretap recordings of Julian ordering his guards to dispose of Arthur, and financial ledgers showing thirty million dollars embezzled from corporate accounts to fund Julian’s private mercenary network.
"Seven years ago, Julian Gregory drugged me and committed me under a false name to a private facility," Arthur announced to the horrified board. "He did this to steal my inheritance, control my company, and keep my wife and daughter in forced poverty."
"It's fake! It's all fabricated digital lies!" Julian screamed, his voice breaking into hysterical shrieks as he looked around at the cold, disgusted faces of the board members who were already backing away from him.
The lead NYPD detective stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Julian Gregory, you are under arrest for attempted murder, kidnapping, corporate embezzlement, and grand larceny," the detective stated clearly. "You have the right to remain silent..."
As the handcuffs snapped around Julian’s wrists, he looked at Arthur with naked, venomous hatred. "You lost seven years, Arthur! You'll never get those years back! You missed her first steps! You missed her first words!"

Arthur walked over, standing inches from Julian, looking down at his defeated stepbrother with quiet, profound pity.
"I missed seven years, Julian," Arthur said softly. "But I have the rest of my life with my family. And you have thirty years in a federal cell to think about what you built on lies."
