Chapter 10 - Under the Oak Tree

The late afternoon sun cast a warm, golden light across the lawn as the children headed inside the pavilion for early dinner.
Arthur walked down the terrace steps and crossed the grass toward the old oak tree. The heavy tree was still there, its broad branches stretching wide against the clear blue sky, but the dark, lonely shadows beneath it were gone, replaced by dappled sunlight and soft green grass.
Lily was waiting for him beneath the tree, sitting in her Mark-VI frame, holding Mr. Bear in her lap. Mr. Bear looked slightly different now—he had been professionally restored by a master toy artisan, his fur cleaned, his seams reinforced with gold silk thread, and a custom, tiny carbon-fiber ear sewn neatly onto his head.
Arthur sat down on the wooden bench beside her, leaning back against the rough bark of the oak tree.
"Are you tired, Lily?" Arthur asked gently.
"No," Lily smiled, leaning her head against his arm. "I was just looking at the tree."
Arthur looked up into the canopy of leaves, wrapping his broad arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his side. "It’s a good tree."
"It used to be the place where people forgot me," Lily said softly, her light gray-blue eyes clear and peaceful as she looked up at him. "Now it’s my favorite place in the whole world."
Arthur looked down at his daughter—the little girl who had taught a reclusive billionaire how to feel, how to fight, and how to love again. He kissed the top of her blonde head, feeling the warm, steady rhythm of her breath against his chest.
"It’s not just a tree anymore, Lily," Arthur whispered, his voice filled with quiet, unbroken strength. "It’s where our family started."

Lily closed her eyes, clutching Mr. Bear tightly in her small hands, surrounded by the warm autumn sun, knowing with absolute certainty that she would never be invisible, never be overlooked, and never be unwanted ever again.
She was home.
