Chapter 5 - The First Strike

The peace of the Vance Estate lasted exactly four days.

On Thursday morning, while Lily was sitting in the sunlit breakfast nook eating fresh blueberry pancakes with Martha, a sharp ring echoed from Arthur’s private study.

Arthur answered the secure video line. The face of his lead legal counsel, Evelyn Reed, appeared on the high-definition monitor. She looked pale, her brow furrowed in intense concentration.

"Arthur, we have a problem," Evelyn said without greeting. "Charles Sterling just filed an emergency petition with the County Family Court to stay the temporary guardianship order for Lily Harper."

Arthur’s face turned into an unreadable mask of iron. "On what grounds?"

"He’s using a manufactured child-welfare claim," Evelyn explained, pulling up a digital filing. "Sterling’s legal team submitted a report from a state-appointed child psychologist who claims that placing a child with special physical needs in the home of an 'unmarried, emotionally distant corporate executive with a history of social isolation' constitutes a risk to her developmental well-being."

Arthur let out a low, dangerous laugh. "An emotionally distant executive. Sterling is getting creative."

"It gets worse," Evelyn continued. "Sterling has used his political influence on the child welfare board to order an immediate, unannounced welfare inspection of your estate tomorrow morning at nine AM. If the inspector finds a single violation—or if Sterling can prove your house isn't equipped for long-term pediatric disability care—they will issue an immediate recovery warrant and return Lily to St. Jude’s pending a formal hearing."

"They want to take her back?" Arthur’s voice dropped into a register that made the glass paperweight on his desk vibrate slightly.

"Sterling is using this to break you, Arthur," Evelyn warned. "He knows if he can force a public custody battle, it will damage Vance Bio-Tech’s public standing right before your annual shareholder vote on the St. Jude’s land acquisition trust. He wants you to drop the guardianship to save your corporate reputation."

Arthur slowly closed his laptop screen.

"Call my engineering department at the main laboratory," Arthur ordered smoothly. "Tell them to load the heavy transport truck with the Mark-VI Pediatric Mobility Prototype. Tell the chief medical officer to report to my estate by six o'clock tonight."

"Arthur... the Mark-VI isn't approved for public release yet!" Evelyn gasped. "It’s still in advanced clinical trial phase!"

"I don't care about public release," Arthur said softly, standing up and staring out the window toward the garden where Lily was laughing with Martha. "My daughter needs an upgrade. And Charles Sterling is about to learn what happens when you try to tear down a house built by an engineer."
