Chapter 7 - The Inspection

At precisely nine o'clock on Friday morning, three dark sedans pulled up the winding driveway of the Vance Estate.
Out stepped Charles Sterling, wearing a double-breasted navy suit, flanked by two corporate attorneys and a stern-looking woman with a leather briefcase: Dr. Aris Thorne, the senior child welfare inspector appointed by the county board.
Sterling held his chin high, a triumphant, sneering smile on his face as he walked up the granite ramp toward the front doors. He was ready for a fight. He expected Arthur Vance to offer a bribe, to unleash a legal team, or to attempt to hide the child behind corporate security.
The double doors opened automatically.
Arthur stood in the grand foyer, wearing a crisp charcoal suit, his hands resting casually in his pockets. Beside him stood Evelyn Reed and a court recorder with an open laptop.
"Dr. Thorne," Arthur said smoothly, completely ignoring Sterling. "Welcome to my home. You are here to conduct a pediatric welfare assessment for Lily Harper?"
Dr. Thorne stepped forward, her eyes cold and clinical. "That is correct, Mr. Vance. Under County Petition 402, we are authorized to inspect the premises for physical accessibility, emotional safety, and medical support compliance."
"Please, proceed," Arthur invited, stepping aside with a calm gesture.
Sterling smirked, stepping into the foyer. "We'll start with the child's living quarters, Thorne. I highly doubt a reclusive tech executive has appropriate specialized nursing equipment on—"
Sterling stopped dead in his tracks.
Lily glided out from the sunlit hallway in her matte-white Mark-VI frame. She wore a bright yellow summer dress, her blonde hair neatly styled in braids, holding a tablet on her lap where she was drawing a high-definition digital illustration using an electronic stylus.
Dr. Thorne’s jaw dropped. As a senior child welfare expert, she recognized advanced medical hardware instantly. She had seen prototype mobility frames in medical journals, but she had never seen anything like the sleek, silent machine gliding smoothly across the floor.
"Is that... a dynamic pressure-mapping frame?" Dr. Thorne gasped, dropping her clinical mask entirely as she rushed forward, dropping to her knees beside Lily’s chair. "The Vance Bio-Tech Mark-VI? This hasn't even hit the commercial market!"
"It was calibrated specifically for Lily’s spinal metrics yesterday evening," Arthur said casually, walking over and resting a hand gently on the headrest of Lily's chair. "The frame transmits real-time neurological telemetry to her pediatric orthopedic team at Children's Hospital via encrypted satellite link every three minutes."
Dr. Thorne opened her briefcase, pulling out her inspection checklist, but her hands were trembling. "And her daily care team?"
"Martha is a certified pediatric nurse who resides full-time on the property," Arthur stated, gesturing to Martha, who stepped out with a binder containing complete medical logs. "We also have a private physical therapist who arrives at ten AM three days a week, and a dedicated early childhood educator starting on Monday."
Sterling’s face turned from pale to an ugly, mottled red. "This is an illegal demonstration of unapproved medical technology on a ward of the state!" he yelled, turning on Dr. Thorne. "Thorne, write up the violation! He’s using an experimental device on a six-year-old!"
May you like
Lily looked at Sterling, her light gray-blue eyes narrowing into the same quiet, razor-sharp focus that Arthur possessed.
"It’s not an experiment, mister," Lily said, her voice clear, firm, and entirely devoid of fear. "It’s my chair. Arthur fixed it because he knows how to fix things. You just know how to yell."
