Chapter 11 - Shadows of the Past

The warmth of the Christmas hearth still lingered in the Carter household, but the turn of the new year brought an unexpected chill. Ethan’s corporate empire, though wildly successful, had enemies. Specifically, a disgruntled former business partner, Richard Vance, who had been ousted years ago for unethical financial practices, had returned to the city. Richard had watched Ethan’s sudden domestic bliss and newfound public image as a family man with brewing resentment.
One rainy Tuesday morning, a certified letter arrived at the townhouse. Sarah opened it, expecting a standard legal notice or a charity invitation. Instead, her face paled. Inside were detailed photographs of her old apartment, her medical records from her darkest days of financial struggle, and court documents regarding Lily’s custody that had been subtly altered to look fraudulent.
"Ethan, you need to see this," Sarah whispered as he walked into the kitchen, buttoning his cuffs for work.

Ethan read the contents, his jaw tightening. A note attached read: “A beautiful family built on a foundation of secrets. Let’s see how the public reacts to the billionaire who bought a family to fix his image.” Richard was planning to launch a media smear campaign, claiming Ethan had manipulated Sarah into a marriage of convenience and illegally fast-tracked Lily’s adoption.
"He’s targeting our stability," Ethan said, his voice deadly calm but his eyes reflecting a deep worry. "He knows he can't hurt my finances, so he’s going after what I love most."
