Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

The DNA test results were returned from an independent federal lab within forty-eight hours: a 99.9% match. Mia Rose Thompson and Lucas Michael Thompson were officially recognized as the biological children of Michael Sterling, making them legal heirs to the Sterling fortune.

The news sent shockwaves through Cincinnati’s high society and sent Sterling Enterprises' stock soaring.

However, inside the mansion, a far more dangerous battle was under way.

Mia’s condition suddenly deteriorated.

It started on a Thursday evening. Mia had been making steady progress, walking short distances around her room with the help of her physical therapist. But after dinner, her fever spiked to 103 degrees Fahrenheit. Her breathing became shallow, and her heart monitor began shrieking with warnings of severe arrhythmia.

Dr. Vance and two private nurses rushed into the suite, administering emergency anti-arrhythmic medications while Sarah wept at the foot of the bed.

"Her white blood cell count is skyrocketing!" Dr. Vance shouted, reviewing the blood lab monitors. "She’s going into acute toxic shock! Something is causing violent systemic inflammation!"

Robert rushed into the room, pulling off his jacket. "What happened?! She was stable three hours ago!"

"It looks like an acute allergic reaction or a chemical toxicity!" Dr. Vance said, her hands moving frantically as she prepared a syringe of epinephrine. "Did she ingest anything new today?!"

Sarah shook her head wildly. "No! Only her usual organic soup prepared by the chef downstairs!"

Robert turned to Marcus, who was standing by the door. "Lock down the kitchen. No one leaves the property."

Marcus nodded and sprinted down the hallway.

Down in the estate’s grand kitchen, Marcus and two security guards caught the temporary assistant chef—a man named Pierre who had been hired three days ago through an elite catering agency—trying to slip out the servant entrance carrying a leather backpack.

Marcus tackled the man to the floor, pinning his arms behind his back, and unzipped the bag.

Inside was an empty glass vial labeled with a synthetic plant toxin—a rare compound designed to induce severe cardiac inflammation that would mimic natural heart failure in patients with existing cardiomyopathy.

When Robert walked down to the basement holding cell ten minutes later, his face was terrifyingly emotionless.

Pierre was tied to a chair, trembling as Marcus stood over him.

Robert stepped into the light, setting the empty vial on the metal table between them.

"Who paid you?" Robert asked quietly.

"I... I don't know what you're talking about!" Pierre stammered, sweating profusely. "I was just setting the tray!"

Robert stepped closer, placing his hands on the arms of Pierre’s chair, leaning in until his grey eyes locked onto the man’s soul.

"My seven-year-old niece is upstairs fighting for her life," Robert said, his voice dropping into a whisper that chilled the room. "If she dies... there is no court, no lawyer, and no prison in this world that will protect you from me. Who gave you the vial?"

Pierre broke, weeping uncontrollably. "It was a man in a black sedan! He met me in the alley behind the catering hall! He gave me fifty thousand dollars in cash! He said... he said it would just make her look sicker so she would be moved back to the public hospital! He said his name was Mr. Vance’s assistant!"

Robert stood up smoothly, adjusting his cuffs.

"Marcus," Robert ordered. "Hand him over to the FBI. Make sure the chain of custody on that vial is airtight."

Robert returned upstairs.

Thanks to Dr. Vance’s rapid administration of a specialized neutralizing agent, Mia’s fever began to drop, and her heart rate stabilized once more. But the attack had taken a heavy toll on her already weakened body. She lay pale and unconscious, her chest rising weakly under the sheets.

Sarah sat beside the bed, holding Lucas in her lap. She looked up at Robert as he entered the room.

"They tried to kill her, didn't they?" Sarah whispered, her voice trembling with heartbreak. "Even in this beautiful mansion... we aren't safe."

Robert walked over, dropping to his knees beside Sarah’s chair. He took Sarah’s hand and held Lucas’s small shoulder.

"I failed to protect you today, Sarah," Robert admitted, his eyes filled with profound remorse. "I let my enemy inside my home. But I swear to you on my brother’s memory... Richard Vance will never take another step in freedom."

Suddenly, Dr. Vance’s tablet chimed with an urgent, high-priority notification from the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN).

Dr. Vance looked at the screen, her eyes going wide with shock.

"Mr. Sterling... Mrs. Thompson..." Dr. Vance gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "A donor heart has just become available."
