Chapter 6 - The Longest Night

At 2:15 AM, the Gulfstream touched down on the snow-covered runway at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
A specialized organ transport team was waiting on the tarmac with a temperature-controlled, computerized organ preservation container containing the donor heart.
Without losing a single second, the medical team transferred the organ onto the aircraft, and the jet turned right around, taking off back into the stormy night sky toward Cincinnati, where Dr. Jonathan Hayes and his full surgical team were waiting in the hyper-sterile operating theater at Cincinnati General Hospital.
By 4:30 AM, Mia was wheeled into Operating Room 3.
The heavy double doors closed, leaving Sarah, Robert, and Lucas standing in the quiet, dim waiting room.
The hours stretched like torturous years.
Sarah paced back and forth across the linoleum floor, her rosary beads weaving through her worn fingers. Lucas had eventually collapsed from sheer exhaustion, sleeping with his head resting on Robert’s lap on the vinyl waiting room sofa.
Robert sat motionless, his arm supporting his sleeping nephew, staring at the glowing red IN SURGERY sign above the double doors.
For the first time in his life, all his money, all his power, all his corporate influence meant absolutely nothing. He couldn't negotiate with the heart; he couldn't threaten the surgery into succeeding. He was completely at the mercy of God, a team of surgeons, and a seven-year-old girl’s desire to live.
At 7:00 AM, as the first grey light of dawn broke through the hospital windows, a commotion sounded down the hallway.
Marcus walked into the waiting room, flanked by two armed security guards and two senior agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"Boss," Marcus said low. "We got him."
Robert looked up, carefully shifting Lucas onto a pillow on the sofa before standing up. "Richard Vance?"
"The FBI executed a search warrant on Vance’s penthouse suite two hours ago based on the chef's confession and the financial paper trail we provided," the lead FBI agent explained. "We recovered encrypted communications proving Vance ordered the hit on Michael Thompson two years ago, as well as the poisoning attempt on Mia."
Sarah gasped, holding her hand to her mouth.
"Where is he now?" Robert asked, his voice dead calm.
"In federal custody at the downtown precinct," the agent replied. "He’s being charged with conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, and attempted murder of a minor. He will never see the light of day again."
A weight that had hung over the Sterling family for fifteen years seemed to lift from the room. The dark shadow that had chased Michael into hiding, that had stolen his life, and that had threatened his children was finally destroyed.
Suddenly, the surgical doors swung open.
Dr. Jonathan Hayes stepped out, pulling off his surgical mask. His green scrubs were stained with blood, and his face showed extreme fatigue.
Sarah ran forward, her heart in her throat. "Doctor?! Please... tell me my baby girl is okay!"
Dr. Hayes looked at Sarah, then at Robert. Slowly, a tired, magnificent smile broke across his face.
"Mrs. Thompson," Dr. Hayes said, his voice warm with emotion. "The new heart took instantly. As soon as we removed the bypass clamps, her new heart began beating strong and steady on its own. Mia is alive. The surgery was a complete success."
Sarah let out a choked scream of pure joy, collapsing into Robert’s arms, weeping tears of overwhelming relief.

Robert held her tightly, burying his face in her hair, his own eyes brimming with happy tears as he looked over at little Lucas, who had woken up and was jumping up and down with a huge smile on his face.
"She made it," Robert whispered, looking up at the morning sky through the window. "Michael... she made it."
